U.S. Treasurer Withrow to visit Jackson County

U.S. Treasurer Mary Ellen Withrow, the first person to hold the office of treasure at all three local, state and national levels, will visit Jackson County Thursday and Friday, Aug. 3 and 4.

Withrow, who was named the 40th U.S. treasurer in 1994, will make a public appearance in Sylva at the Justice Center on Aug. 3 at 3 p.m. She will also serve as guest of honor and speaker at the Jackson County Democratic Party social and dinner that same night at the Library of Sapphire Valley near Cashiers.

Invited and expected to attend include state Senator and Mrs. Dan Robinson; N.C. House Representative and Mrs. Phil Haire; Mary Ann Enloe, N.C. House candidate; and Mr. and Mrs. Sam Neill, candidate for the 11th U.S. Congressional District; as well as local county officials.

Withrow was elected treasurer of her native Marion County, Ohio, in 1976 and again in 1980. She then ran and was elected treasurer of the state of Ohio in 1982 and re-elected in 1986 and 1990.

During her tenure as Ohio's treasurer, Withrow earned nationwide recognition for her innovative programs, management efficiencies and record earnings. In March 1992 she received the Donald L. Scantlebury Memorial Award from the Treasury's Joint Financial Management Improvement Program for financial excellence and improvement in government.

Withrow, who began her career in public service in 1969 as the first woman elected to the Elgin Local School Board in Marion County, is a member of the board of directors of Women Executives in State Government, an inductee into the Ohio Women's Hall of Fame and a recipient of a Women Executives in State Government fellowship to Harvard University.

Withrow has been a member of the Democratic National Committee Executive Committee since 1984 and past president of the Marion County Democratic Club. She served as honorary chairman of Vice President Al Gore's 1988 presidential campaign in Ohio and was an alternate delegate for Jimmy Carter in the 1980 Democratic Convention.

The Aug. 3 event in Sapphaire Valley is open to the public, but seating is limited. For reservation, contact Eddie Madden at 743-9664, Ext. 203; or Cynthia Easter at 743-6445 (days) or 743-3836 (evenings).
