New voting machines to be displayed at Justice Center

By Carey Phillips

Jackson County voters will have a new experience when they go to the polls for the May 2 primary election.

A different type of voting machine, the ELECTronic 1242, will be utilized this year.

A test machine for public inspection will be set up in the Justice Center first floor lobby from April 10-21. Voters can learn more about the machine during that time.

Like the old machines, voters will be able to view the full ballot at one time. However, rather than using levers, the new machines are of the touch button variety.

The machines are provided by Danaher Controls of Elizabethtown. They are used in 26 states, including eight North Carolina counties. Macon, Henderson, Cherokee and Madison counties in Western North Carolina use the machines, according to Lisa Lovedahl-Lehman, director of elections for Jackson County.

The final day to register for the primary is Friday. One-stop voting will begin Monday at the Board of Elections office in the old county administration building on Ridgeway Street.

Persons who will be out of the county on election day may cast a one-stop ballot at the Board of Elections office until 5 p.m. April 28.

The office will hold extended hours the week of April 17. From April 17-20, hours will be 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Regular hours of 8 a.m.-5 p.m. will be observed Friday, April 21. The office will be open from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, April 22.

Absentee voting for persons until to go to the polls is also under way. Applications must be made in person by a near relative or through the mail.

For more information, call the Board of Elections at 586-7538.
