Savannah Fire Chief Darrell Woodard (second from right) was named Jackson Countyıs Volunteer of the Year at Tuesdayıs first Volunteer Emergency Services Appreciation Dinner. Presenting the award were, from left, Commissioners Stacy Buchanan, Roberta Crawford and Jay Denton. A 21-year veteran of the department and chief since 1984, Woodard was honored with the following tribute:
"We, as members, are proud of our nominee and feel that he has contributed 200 percent towards making our department one of the best around. Everything he does is because he cares for the people of our community and for Jackson County." Thanking those who nominated him, Woodard stressed the "team effort" needed to make volunteer firefighting a success.
