Sylva’s newest fast food chain could be a Cookout restaurant.
Conceptual plans on file in the Jackson County Planning Office show the restaurant being located on N.C. 107 south of Plum Street on the opposite side of the highway from Pizza Hut.
A Verizon Wireless cellular sales store is shown adjacent to the proposed Cookout on the site plan. Sylva town board members in September rejected a variance request for that store’s sign; however, recent plans submitted to the county would appear to show that project proceeding.
County Planner John Jeleniewski received the concept plans April 4.
Cookout is headquartered in Greensboro and serves “cook out” style food such as hamburgers and hot dogs. Plans show a 3,200-square-foot building with a double drive through lane. The plan shows the potential Verizon store as 3,500 square feet, and there would be a total of 60 parking spots for the two businesses.
A person who answered the phone at Cookout’s corporate headquarters said they couldn’t confirm plans for the restaurant and that they only know two weeks before a store is opened.
E-mails from October 2012 that went to Jackson County and N.C. Department of Transportation personnel indicate restaurant developers were initially interested in a location at 276 East Main Street (beside Zaxby’s), but, according to Jeleniewski, “the engineers felt it too costly to proceed there.”
The planning department sent developers a zoning application packet in February and received the preliminary site plan April 4.
