The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a Sylva man on two counts of statutory rape.
Kenneth David Groat, 38, whose address is listed on warrants as 71 Iron Mountain Drive, was arrested last Thursday. Warrants say he “unlawfully, willfully and feloniously did engage in intercourse with ... a person who at the time of offense was 15 years of age or younger.
“The defendant was at least 12 years old and six years older than the victim and was not lawfully married to the victim.”
One of the offenses is alleged to have occurred on Dec. 11, 2018 and the other between Aug. 13 and Aug. 26, 2017.
Groat was held at the Jackson County Justice Center in lieu of a $400,000 bond, but is no longer listed as an inmate on the jail’s website. He is not to be in the presence of children under 16 unsupervised and was required to give a DNA sample.
