Jessica Mae Carpenter, 35, of Aurora Lane, Sylva, has been charged with statutory rape.
Court papers allege she engaged in a sexual act with a 14-year-old male from Jackson County.
A statutory rape charge results when an adult is believed to have engaged in a sex act with a person under the age of 16, regardless of whether the act was consensual.
While investigating a case where alcohol was bought and given to a minor, officers determined other crimes had occurred, and charged Carpenter with statutory rape, according to information released Monday (Dec. 16) by Chief Deputy Chip Hall of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident is alleged to have taken place Dec. 7-8.
Carpenter was arrested Dec. 13 and as of Monday remained jailed under a $100,000 secured bond.
Authorities are seeking other witnesses and potential victims who may have received alcohol from the suspect or been victims of sexual misconduct.
Any such persons are encouraged to contact Det. Andi Clayton at 586-1392, Hall said.
