A local teen was cited for traffic violations after he hit a woman attempting to cross West Main Street over the weekend.

The accident happened Saturday, at approximately 3:50 p.m., Sylva Police Chief Chris Hatton said.

The driver, Silas McPherson, 16, of Sylva, received citations for failure to yield the right of way, failure to yield to a pedestrian and unsafe movement.

“(McPherson) was operating a vehicle that made a left turn from Spring Street onto Main Street,” Hatton said. “The driver did not see the pedestrian in the crosswalk.”

The victim, 77-year old Sheila Horne of Urbana, Illinois, was taken to Mission Hospital in Asheville with undisclosed injuries.

Horne was found about 6 feet from the crosswalk when first responders arrived on scene, according to the accident report.

Drugs or alcohol are not believed to be a factor in the incident.

McPherson is the son of Sylva Town Board member Greg McPherson.

For some time, Sylva had a spate of pedestrian involved accidents, but the town has not seen one for approximately two years, Hatton said.
