After more than a year, a request from 13-year-old Boy Scout David Hopkins for Jackson County to have a flag has been fulfilled. During their Feb. 18 work session, commissioners by consensus chose the above design, created by Southwestern Community College student Jessica Waldron.
County officials solicited entries from students at SCC, Smoky Mountain High School and Western Carolina University. Faculty member Scott Clontz of the advertising and graphic design program coordinated SCC designs; Smoky Mountain High School Teacher Gayle Woody and WCU art professor Jon Jicha coordinated their schools’ entries.
Commissioners are expected to officially adopt the flag design during their March 4 regular meeting. Hopkins said Tuesday he’s glad commissioners have selected a flag. “It feels like I got something done in the community,” he said.
