Mitchell held Smoky Mountain scoreless in the second half Friday en route to a 26-14 non-conference football victory at Carr Hooper Stadium/Babe Howell Field.

Mountaineer quarterback Ty Turbyfill accounted for 245 yards of total offense. He completed eight of 11 passes for 126 yards and a touchdown and carried 19 times for 119 yards and two TDs.

Mitchell’s Caius Arrington had four receptions for 87 yards and a score.

Teammate Tanner Duncan carried 10 times for 47 yards and a TD.

Dustin Stephens picked up 158 yards and had a TD in 24 carries for the Mustangs (1-1). He caught three passes for 25 yards.

SM’s Chris Wilburn completed five of 10 passes for 38 yards and carried 19 times for 59 yards and a score.

The Mustangs drove to the Mountaineer 34 to start the second half before being stopped on downs.

Mitchell marched 66 yards in 13 plays to take the lead. Turbyfill completed a 13-yard pass to Ty Sparks and had an 11-yard run. Duncan’s 13-yard TD run put the Mounties up 19-14 with 3:06 to play in the third quarter. A conversion pass was incomplete.

SM used runs of 13 yards by Wilburn and 17 yards by Stephens for a first down at the Mitchell 31. The drive ended on downs at the 27.

Following a punt, a 19-yard pass from Wilburn to Stephens helped the Mustangs reach the Mountaineer 37. On fourth-and-11 they lined up to punt for the first time this season. The snap sailed over the punter’s head for a 27-yard loss to the SM 35.

Turbyfill had a 10-yard run and completed a 6-yard pass to Arrington on fourth-and-1 for a first down at the 6. Turbyfill scored on the next play. Cole Woodard kicked the extra point for a 26-14 lead with 2:16 left.

After both teams were stopped on downs to open the game, Mitchell went on top 7-0 the second time it had the ball. On third-and-5, Turbyfill completed a short pass to Arrington, who turned it into a 72-yard touchdown. Woodard’s PAT made it 7-0 with 1:13 to play in the first period.

The Mustangs responded with a 67-yard drive in nine plays. Stephens set up the score when he broke off a 42-yard run to the 1. Wilburn scored from there on third down. Hunter Pressley’s PAT tied it 7-7 with 9:23 to go in the half.

The Mounties answered by marching 66 yards in nine plays. Turbyfill did most of the damage as he completed a 16-yard pass to Cole Sparks and had runs of 14 and 12 yards. On third-and-9, he avoided a sack and scored on a 24-yard run. Woodard missed the extra point leaving Mitchell up 13-7 at the 5:48 mark.

SM countered with a 76-yard drive in 10 plays. Wilburn completed a 14-ayard pass to Darien Bird before Stephens scored on a 25-yard run up the middle. Pressley’s PAT with 56.2 seconds on the clock gave the Mustangs a 14-13 halftime lead.
