Two Jackson County residents face drug trafficking charges after they were allegedly found with drugs in their car.
James Adam Brooks, 39, of Sylva was arrested for two felony counts of trafficking opium or heroin, one felony count each of maintaining a vehicle dwelling or place for distribution of controlled substances and conspire to traffic opium or heroin, and possession of methamphetamine, and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.
Kaylee Ann Hedden, 21, of Sylva was arrested for two felony counts of trafficking opium or heroin, one felony count each of maintaining a vehicle dwelling or place for distribution of controlled substances and conspire to traffic opium or heroin, and possession of methamphetamine and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.
They were arrested near the intersection of East Main Street and Asheville Highway following a traffic stop by Sylva police.
“Brooks and Hedden were encountered during a traffic stop by Sylva PD officers of a 2009 Mazda 6 being driven by Hedden,” Sylva Assistant Police Chief John Thomas said.
Officers allegedly located eight grams of what they suspect to be fentanyl and five grams of meth during a search.
Trafficking opium or heroin in amounts between 4 and 14 grams is a class F felony and carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 70 months in prison. Maintaining a vehicle, dwelling or place is a class I felony and carries a three to 12 month sentence. Conspiracy to traffic opium or heroin is a class F felony and carries a minimum sentence of 70 months in prison.
Brooks remains in the Jackson County Detention Center under a $250,000 secured bond.
Hedden remains in the detention center under a $100,000 secured bond.
