Quilts of Valor

Vietnam veteran Tom Baker of Cullowhee is wrapped in his Quilt of Valor Tuesday afternoon at a ceremony at Bogart’s by Sue Bryant (left) and Dean Bryant (hidden). Twelve quilts were distributed to veterans of the Vietnam era. Each recipient also received a thank-you letter addressed to “American Hero” from the Quilts of Valor Bee of the Smoky Mountain Quilters Guild of Western North Carolina. The quilts were sewn by members of the Bee, which has donated more than 1,100 Quilts of Valor in its 10-year existence. A nationwide movement, Quilts of Valor was started in 2003 when quilter Katherine Roberts sewed a quilt for her son in Iraq and invited her quilting friends to make quilts for every man in his unit.
