A Sylva man was arrested July 19 on four felony charges stemming from alleged sex acts with a child.
Jackson County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Shawn Littlebull Standingdeer, 35, on two felony counts of sexual activity by a substitute parent or custodian and two felony counts of statutory rape of a child 15 years old or younger.
Standingdeer’s alleged attacks on the child took place between August and June 2021 when he was in the position of caretaker and had authority over the child..
Statutory rape of a child 15 years old or younger is a class B1 felony; if convicted he could face from 144 months to life in prison for a single charge. Sexual activity by a substitute parent or custodian is a class E felony. If convicted he could face from 15 to 63 months in prison.
Standingdeer is currently being held in the Jackson County Detention Center in lieu of a $500,000 bond.
Standingdeer was arrested in 2014 by the Sylva Police Department for possession of methamphetamine, resisting a public officer and carrying a concealed gun.
Jackson County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Matt Wike wants residents to know they have an obligation to victims.
“Members of the community age 18 or older who become aware of a child or underage person, who is a victim of a sexual assault are required to report the crime to law enforcement,” he said. “Reporting persons can call our office and speak with any deputy or investigator to report. They can also use our Crime Stoppers email or phone line on our JCSO website.”
