THE SYLVA HERALD...

offices will be closed Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 24 and 25. Please remember that all advertising and news deadlines for the Dec. 27 edition have been moved ahead to Friday, Dec. 21, at noon. Thanks in advance for your cooperation.


SOUL INFUSION...

will hold a winter "Soul-stice" party from 9 p.m. until midnight Friday, Dec. 21. Music will be by local potter and musician Karen Barnes, who plays the blues as "Sugar" Barnes. Acclaimed old-time country folk musician and mountain storyteller Jerry Harmon returns to Soul Infusion from 9 p.m. until midnight Saturday, Dec. 22. Both events are free and for all ages.


EASTGATE PHARMACY...

will close its lunch counter today (Thursday). When the drug store opened its snack bar in April 1962, there were only six or seven places to eat lunch in town, said owner Kim Cowan. Times have changed and business has dwindled as numerous other restaurants have moved to town, Cowan said. He may reopen the lunch counter in the spring.


CLARE NICHOLAS SCHEXNYDER...

daughter of Karl and Veronica Nicholas of Sylva, is currently in Kabul, Afghanistan. Clare is a producer for CNN, and her husband, Jay, is a cameraman for the news network. Jay has joined Clare in Kabul, where they will probably stay through Christmas to cover the first days of the Afghan interim government. Clare interviewed Hamid Karzai, who will head up Afghanistan's interim government, and then spent three hours touring the presidential palace where he is staying. JACKSON COUNTY'S ...

staffed recycling centers will close Monday, Dec. 24, at 5 p.m. and reopen at 7 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 26.
