RAY'S FLORIST...

SYLVA MERCHANTS....

will hold a downtown open house this Saturday, Dec. 7. Many stores will stay open until 9 p.m. with refreshments and specials to tempt holiday shoppers. A portion of the day's proceeds will be donated to the Jackson County Christmas Store.


POINSETTIAS...

are now available through the Smoky Mountain Future Farmers of America club, said SMHS horticulture teacher Chan Chandler. Prices range from $4 to $12, with a variety of sizes and colors are available. Poinsettias can be purchased at the school greenhouse between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. Visitors should check in at the SMHS office. For more information, call Chandler at 586-5392 or 586-2177. All proceeds from the plant sale will be used to fund FFA activities, Chandler said.


DILLSBORO'S ANNUAL FESTIVAL...

of Lights and Luminaries will get under way this weekend. A number of the village's shops are featured in a color ad on the back page of this week's Community Life section.


ADDING TO...

the excitement at Friday night's annual Dillsboro yuletide festival will be the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad's Lights and Luminaries trains, which will depart both Fridays from Bryson City at 5 p.m. with Dillsboro as a destination. Each train will have a two-hour layover in Dillsboro to allow passengers to enjoy the holiday festival. GSMR also offers "Santa Express" excursions daily during December. For information about the special holiday trains, call 586-8811.


DEAN COWARD ....

has moved his accounting office to 68C Asheville Highway in Sylva. His new office is located across from O'Malley's and beside General Insurance. For more information, call 586-3002.


DEADLINE FOR ...

the Jackson County Department on Aging's Operation Christmas Box is Friday, Dec. 13. Those preparing boxes for homebound elderly should take them to the Department on Aging offices (next to the Golden Age Center) by Dec. 13. For information, call Helen Bryson at 586-8562.


HARRAH'S...

Cherokee Casino and Hotel has been recognized by Harrah's Entertainment Inc. for a flawless safety and risk management program. Barbara Owle, risk safety administrator, has also been recognized for her work in developing the program and achieving the perfect score. Owle was named Harrah's Entertainment Risk Safety Manager of the year for the Eastern Division. "Our staff works diligently to ensure our safety, and I congratulate all of them for this fantastic achievement," said Harrah's General Manager Pat Dennehy.


We goofed...

In a story published on Page 1C Nov. 21, we should have said "feet" everywhere we said "inches." The information was incorrectly included in the story about Balfour Knight's pipe organ. We thank story author Fran Webster for pointing out our mistake.
