Notes from our business community
- and everywhere else

THE KITCHEN SHOP is featured this week in our Business Spotlight on the back page of this section. Located in Dillsboro Court between Dillsboro and Sylva, the store offers kitchen utensils, spices and hot sauces as well as gift certificates and a bridal registry service. The Kitchen Shop will be open late during the Dillsboro Luminaries. Call 586-4182 for more information.

RAY'S FLORIST will hold its annual Open House this Friday and Saturday, Dec. 5 and 6, from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. each day. Save 20 percent storewide this weekend as you enjoy the shop's large selection of ornaments, poinsettias, and fresh and silk wreaths.

JACKSON'S GENERAL STORE'S Christmas Open House will be this Saturday, Dec. 6, from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. Owner Crystal Jones is offering a 20 percent discount on many items and invites everyone to stop by for refreshments. The store's Saturday visitors may register to win door prizes (store gift certificates) and will receive a free candle with every purchase.

IT'S BY NATURE, a gallery of southern crafts will open this weekend at 678 W. Main street next to Peebles. Owner Sandi Cooper will feature art and crafts by local and regional artists, including pottery, jewelry, weavings, baskets, fine woodcrafts, handcrafted cards, paper and journals, paintings, photography and more. "Stop by - there's a little something for everyone on your Christmas list," Cooper said.

WHAT CAN YOU do to help a child in need during the holidays? Reading is one of the things that can give children great pleasure no matter what their family circumstances may be. This Christmas, you can bring the magic of a book into a child's life. For the fifth consecutive year, City Lights is sponsoring the Christmas Giving Tree in association with the Jackson County Health Department, the Region A Partnership for Children, and the Work First office of the Employment Security Commission. The tree is an opportunity to provide books to local children in need. This year, there are 99 children participating, almost twice last year's number. The City Lights American Girls club has made ornaments with the age and gender of a child on each. Take an ornament and place it on the bookstore's tree, and then select a book you would like to give. These purchases receive a 20 percent discount, and books will be delivered to children in time for Christmas. You may also give a book in the name of a friend of loved one, and receive a gift card to indicate how you have chosen to honor that person. If you don't know what to give someone on your gift list, the Giving Tree program is an excellent way to give twice. Make your selection before Dec. 19, when books will be picked up by the service agencies responsible for their distribution. For more information, call City Lights at 586-9499.

THE COMMUNITY Table would like to thank all who helped us make their Thanksgiving dinner a success. The Table needs volunteers, specifically for Sundays in December and in January. If you would like to volunteer, please call James Stewart at 586-6782.
