A NEW BOOK, The Man Who Lived on Main Street: Stories by and about Sol Schulman, will be featured at a reception Friday, Dec. 5, honoring the life of Sylva businessman Sol Schulman, who died Nov. 10 at age 91. The reception will be held at 7 p.m. at City Lights Bookstore.

THE WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA Civil War Round Table will hold its fifth annual Christmas banquet at the Waynesville Country Club on Monday, Dec. 8. The social will begin at 6 p.m. and the buffet dinner at 7. Brian Steel Wills, whose latest book deals with life on the home front during the Civil War, will present a program on Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest. Tickets will be available at the door but prior reservations are recommended by calling 293-7404, 293-9314, or by visiting www.wnccwrt.org.

IT HAS BEEN ALMOST 25 YEARS since 1979, the year the Golden Eagle Band won its second national championship, and also the year Bob Buckner retired from Sylva-Webster High School. To mark this milestone, several people have expressed their desire for a 2004 reunion. A web site, www.GoldenEagleBand.com, has been created as the first step. If you know of someone who was involved with the band from 1960 forward, tell them about the event and the web site.


JACKSON COUNTY'S new sporting goods store, Athletes Advantage, will have a Grand Opening After Thanksgiving Sale on Friday, Nov. 28. Everything in the store will be reduced at least 10 percent, with some as much as 50 percent off. The new business offers sports equipment, apparel, shoes, as well as uniforms for teams of any kind. Owners Bill and Vickie Ansley invite you to come by the store at 152 Sylva Plaza, formerly Four Seasons Sports. They'll have refreshments and an opportunity to register for door prizes.


LAST WEEK'S Christmas Bazaar at First Baptist Church of Sylva produced $10,000 in sales, with an estimated $8,000 in profits. Since this is expected to be the last bazaar, the committee decided 25 percent of the proceeds would go to United Christian Ministries and 25 percent would go to The Christmas Store. The other 50 percent will go to the church's van fund. Bazaar organizers expressed their thanks to everyone in the county who helped make the event a success.

WESTERN CAROLINA University's water treatment facility won one of 14 N.C. Area Wide Facility Optimization Program Awards given for 2002 by the N.C. Department of Environmental and Natural Resources' Division of Environmental Health. The facility was cited for effective turbidity removal. Turbidity is the amount of sand, dirt and other organic and inorganic materials found in water before it is processed through final filters.



El Pacifio Restaurante Mexicano located on Highway 107 opened to a full house two weeks ago, with the assistance of the Jackson County Chamber Ambassadors. Serving authentic Mexican cuisine, the restaurant is open daily and has outdoor dining. Call 586-0681 for more information.
