HARRAH'S CHEROKEE CASINO ...

has announced several staff promotions. Susan Yashenko was promoted to assistant director of casino operations. She was previously a casino manager, a job she held since the casino opened. Yashenko formerly worked at Harrah's Shreveport and is currently a resident of Sylva. Andrew Oocumma of Cherokee has been promoted to Total Rewards manager. He has worked in that department since the casino opened. Several promotions have been announced in the finance department. Jan Curtis is now accounting manager, and Vernon Wells, Adam West, Lucus Buchanan and Angela Marie were promoted to cage cashier supervisors.

CITY LIGHTS BOOKSTORE ...

is inviting all Jackson County authors who have published books to ride on the City Lights float in the Tuesday, Nov. 28, downtown Christmas parade. This year's parade theme is "A Storybook Christmas," and City Lights owner Joyce Moore plans to spotlight local writers on the bookstore's float. Those authors who would like to participate may call Linda Young or Moore at 586-9499 by Friday, Nov. 24.


SYLVA GARDEN CLUB ...

members are now selling "new crop" fancy mammoth pecans just in time for holiday baking. Also available this year are chocolate-covered and sugar-and-spice pecans packaged in colorful foil gift bags. To reserve your pecans, contact any garden club member or call 293-5242 or 586-6186.


COOL BEANS ...

in Dillsboro will hold "Open Mic Nights" on the third Friday each month. The first will be this Friday, Nov. 17, from 7 to 9 p.m. Owner Judy Harris invites local musicians and singers to come and play. A sign-up sheet for this Friday will be available at the store at 6:30 p.m. Friday. Folksinger Kelly Timco plays at Cool Beans on other Fridays from 7 to 9 p.m.


PAPA'S ANGELS, ...

co-authored by Gary Carden of Sylva, will air on CBS at 9 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 3. The show stars Scott Bakula of "Quantum Leap," Cynthia Nixon of "Sex in the City" and Eva Marie Saint.

GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS RAILROAD ...

now offers year-round passenger service. "We believe that the year-round tourist base is growing in this region. By operating in the winter months and encouraging other businesses to remain open, we hope to build the winter market for Western North Carolina," said Jon Schlegel, vice president and general manager. In addition to winter service, the railroad will offer an enhanced excursion option in 2001 that will combine Dillsboro and Bryson City departures into an optional full-day trip.
