ANDRETTI'S

ANDRETTI'S...

was among the many Sylva restaurants and businesses whose employees dressed up last Wednesday to celebrate Halloween. Many merchants stayed open Tuesday night to greet the costumed trick-or-treaters who flocked to Main Street and the Jackson County Recreation Department sponsored "Pumpkin Patch" held each year in the neighborhood surrounding the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce. A NEW RESTAURANT...

guide begins this week in The Sylva Herald. Our Winter Dining Guide will feature area eateries that stay open year-round. The final winner in our Have Dinner on Us contest, which was part of our Summer Dining Guide, is Peggy Cory of Whittier. She won a $25 gift certificate to Lulu's on Main.


JACKSON COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY...

will be closed today (Thursday) from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. for staff training.


GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS RAILROAD'S...

Biltmore Estate Dinner and Wine Train will depart Dillsboro Friday, Nov. 9, at 7:30 p.m. The trip will feature a five-course gourmet dinner paired with a selection of premium Biltmore Estate wines. Travel in Vanderbilt-inspired style on this 2 1/2-hour trip. The menu will include Chardonnay Poached Shrimp and Hickory-smoked Mountain Trout paired with Biltmore Chardonnay Sur Lies; Roasted Red Pepper and Smoked Gouda Souffle with Biltmore Cabernet Blanc de Noir; Breast of Quail and Beef Tournedo with Biltmore's Cardinal's Crest; Medley of White Cheddar, Gorgonzola and goat cheese with Biltmore Sauvignon Blanc; and Pumpkin Cheesecake with Biltmore Special Reserve Chenin Blanc. Smoky Mountain High ...

School senior Rachel Hopper, as part of her Senior Project, has organized a book swap for this Saturday, Nov. 10, in the Fairview Elementary School gym. The event, which Hopper said she organized to promote literacy, will be held from 1-4 p.m. and feature free refreshments. "I've always wanted to be an elementary school teacher, and I've always loved to read," said Hopper, who plans to reward the Fairview class that brings the most books for the event with a pizza party. The event is open to the public free of charge.


BELLA ROMA...

was voted number one in Jackson County for the best pizza at the Rocking Robin Fest held by the American Cancer Society. Also, Anita Pardo, a waitress at Bella Roma, was crowned 2001 Homecoming Queen at WCU.


CABLE TV NETWORK ...

Home and Garden will be at Riverwood Shops in Dillsboro Nov. 15 to film Brant and Karen Barnes in the pottery shop and Ruth McConnell in the pewter shop. "They were interested in native crafts for their segment called 'Country Style,'" said Jackson County Chamber of Commerce Director Julie Spiro, who arranged the feature. "This is great exposure for the entire county."


GIVE BLOOD...

this Friday, Nov. 9, from 1 until 6 p.m. at the Sylva Community Service Center. To make an appointment, call 586-2019 between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.


A BENEFIT SINGING ...

for Connie and Brad Morgan will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at Sugar Creek Freewill Baptist Church on Caney Fork. The Morgans' home was destroyed by fire a few weeks ago.


QUALLA VOLUNTEER...

Fire and Rescue will hold a fund drive for the next several weeks in cooperation with Community Support Services. Families will be contacted by phone and asked to make a pledge. Each family that pledges will receive a beautiful 10 by 13 canvas-mount portrait, compliments of Qualla Fire and Rescue. Proceeds from the fund-raiser will be used for new equipment for the department. For information call 1-800-253-2638.
