FORMER JACKSON COUNTY SOLID WASTE COORDINATOR DAVE FOWLER...

has been appointed to fill an unexpired term on Carteret County's board of commissioners. A graduate of Western Carolina University, Fowler served on Carteret's Board of Equalization and Review and Economic Development Commission and the Coastal Regional Solid Waste Management Authority, which serves three eastern North Carolina counties. Fowler, formerly of Cullowhee, now lives in Cape Carteret.

ORVILLE COWARD...

of Sylva was recently honored by the N.C. State Bar Association for practicing law for more than 50 years. The association honored attorneys who have been licensed since 1951.

DON'T FORGET...

that Sunday's 3:30 p.m. Western Carolina Civic Orchestra concert will be in Bryson City at the new Swain County Center for the Arts next to Swain County High School. The orchestra regularly performs at Western Carolina University's Coulter Building Recital Hall, which is undergoing renovations at this time. The program will consist of music for a chamber orchestra, and area Suzuki violin students will perform.

A POWER OUTAGE...

is scheduled for today (Thursday) in the WCU area. Workers from the university's facilities management department and Duke Power Co. will be replacing three insulators at an electrical substation damaged during last week's heavy winds, and that work will require a temporary power outage. The power outage is scheduled to take place from 2 until 4 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, said Andy Comrie, director of WCU's facilities management department. All WCU campus buildings, the N.C. Center for the Advancement of Teaching, and customers served by the university's off-campus resale electrical system in the Long Branch, Forest Hills and Cullowhee Heights areas will be without power during that time.

and Computer Store is now open in the former Scooters building beside Shear Images beauty salon on N.C. 107. Owners Bruce and Kim Jones offer gourmet coffee, bagels, jumbo muffins and turnovers and have in-house computers where customers can surf the Internet and check their email. They are also a full-service computer store with a Tec+ certified computer technician. LOUANN SMITH...

of Village Studio in Dillsboro has been awarded a Thomas McKeon Scholarship by the Professional Picture Framers Association Board of Directors. The scholarship, given to only five people a year, provides financial assistance for them to take the association's Certified Picture Framer examination. "What we learn from this program really helps us provide more professional service to our customers in proper and innovative framing techniques," Smith said.
