DAVID KELLEY of Sylva is the final winner in our "Have Dinner on Us" contest that was part of our seasonal Great Smokies Dining Guide. He won a $25 gift certificate to Akata Japanese Steakhouse and Seafood House in Sylva. PARADISE FALLS, a film shot in Jackson County and produced by homegrown talent Sean Bridgers and Nick Searcy, will be shown Friday, Nov. 7, at 3:30 p.m. at the Fine Arts Theater on Biltmore Ave. in Asheville as part of the Asheville Film Festival. Directed by Searcy and starring Bridgers and a cast of local actors including Terry Neinhuis and Steve Ayers, the film dramatizes life in this area during the Depression years. Bridgers plays an idealistic young farm boy who goes to extreme measures to save the family farm. CAROLINE ULRICH of Sylva will be flute soloist
in an upcoming concert, "The Brilliance of Baroque" by the
Greenville Symphony Chamber Orchestra, Edvard Tchivzel, conductor. Performances
will be Saturday, Nov. 1 at 8 p.m. in Gunter Theater, Peace Center,
and Sunday, Nov. 2, at 3 p.m. at Furman University. For more information,
call 1-800-888-7768. Ulrich is in her 12th season as principal flute
with the Greenville orchestra and performs around the southeast with
regional orchestras and chamber groups. She lives in Sylva with her
husband, Brad, a music professor at Western Carolina University, and
their two children, Paul and Katherine. THIS ISSUE has lots of information on Halloween parties and other things to do to celebrate the spookiest of holidays. And there's still time to carve a pumpkin to enter in the participating Main Street merchants' first-ever pumpkin-carving contest. See ad for details. JEFF AND KARA JONES of Sylva sent a note asking us to share their thanks for the many kindnesses done for them since their home burned Sept. 1. They praised Sylva, Cullowhee and Savannah firefighters for the wonderful job they do and expressed appreciation to Red Cross representatives who helped. A benefit for the Jones family will be held Saturday, Nov. 1, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the basement of Wilkesdale Baptist Church. RICHARD FRADY, chief of the Cullowhee Fire Department wrote to thank everyone who supported their barbecue on Saturday. "The support we received this year was tremendous," Frady said. DON'T FORGET the barbecue Saturday, Nov. 1, from 1 to 6 p.m. at the Community Service Center. Proceeds will benefit the Jackson County Smart Roads Alliance. Cost is $10 per plate, and a vegetarian option will be available. The event will also include a bake sale. GOLD STAR Mothers - mothers whose sons or daughters have lost their lives while serving in the U.S. armed forces - will be the honored guests as Western Carolina University holds its third annual Veterans' Day observance at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11. Sponsored by the campus organization WCU Veterans and Friends, the event will be held on the lawn in front of Western's Hinds University Center. Some Gold Star Mothers from the area are expected to attend the ceremony. President Woodrow Wilson first used the term "Gold Star Mothers" shortly after World War I to describe American mothers who had lost a son or daughter in the war. Gold Star Mothers residing in Western North Carolina who would like to participate are asked to contact Joan Dickson at 293-8036, or by e-mail at MD24568@wcu.edu. THE COMMUNITY Table would like to remind everyone that we are closed for maintenance until Sunday, Nov. 2. If you find yourself in a food emergency during this time, please call James or Elizabeth at 586-6782 and they will assist you. If you would like to volunteer at the Community Table, please call us at 586-6782.
