JOHN BUECK ...

has joined Century Bank of the Carolinas' (formerly Haywood Savings) Sylva location as assistant vice president. Originally from Franklin, Bueck attended high school in Westerville, Ohio and Ohio State University. He graduated from Western Carolina University in 1993. Stop by and meet the new assistant manager during the bank's open house Friday, Oct. 27. His prior banking experience was with First Citizens Bank as Bryson City branch manager and as a loan officer with State Employees Credit Union in Sylva. Bueck and his wife, Denise, have a 5-year-old daughter, Madison.

THE RALPH J. ANDREWS CAMPGROUND ...

will close for the season on Sunday, Oct. 29. The campground, located on Lake Glenville, will be open again for the 2001 season in mid-April. The campground is operated by the Jackson County Parks and Recreation Department and supervised by Dale Cagle, resident manager. For information, call the campground at 743-3923 or the rec department at 586-6333.


ATTENTION HARRY POTTER FANS! ...

The Jackson County Library will sponsor a workshop on the popular Harry Potter series by British author J.K. Rowling for children in grades 3-6 this Saturday, Oct. 28, from 2 to 4 p.m. Storyteller Bobbie Pell will lead the workshop. Call the library at 586-2016 to reserve a spot. Space is limited, so call right away.


AUDITIONS ...

for "A Christmas Carol," to be staged in December, will be Sunday and Monday, Oct. 29-30, at 6:30 p.m. in the old courthouse. Those auditioning should prepare a one-minute monologue and a song. Information and suggested monologues are available by calling 631-2888.

THAT'S A WAFFLE HOUSE ...

under construction on the Asheville Highway next to Green's Shell, according to property owner Wayne Smith. The new Waffle House should open for business in about two months, Smith said.


DON'T MISS ...

the yard sale this Saturday, Oct. 28, from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Caplinger Chiropractic parking lot. All proceeds will go to the Voice of the Martyrs ministry. Donations of items to sell may be brought to Caplinger Chiropractic at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27.

TWO TRAILS ...

in the Cades Cove District of Great Smoky Mountains National Park are currently closed. These closings will affect both horse and hiker use. The upper 1.7-mile section of the Bote Mountain Trail and a 2.6-mile section of the Appalachian Trail between Russell and Spence Field shelters will be closed to horse use through March 16. The Bote Mountain trail section will also be closed to hikers through Dec. 15. Many sections of the Bote Mountain Trail, which runs from Laurel Creek Road trailhead to the Appalachian Trail, has many sections in need of major repair. A park spokesman said the temporary inconveniences caused by trail closures will benefit trail users in the long run.
