Ground was broken at noon Oct. 18 at the new Dillsboro Crossing, a retirement living community located at the intersection of U.S. 23/U.S. 441, just north of Dillsboro. The planned adult community, operated by Dominium, will provide housing for persons ages 50 and over. With shovels in hand are, from left, Jim Dukes of Dominium; consultant Jay Coward; Dave Rose of Dominium; Mary Barker, director of the Council on Aging; Helen Bryson, director of the Jackson County Department on Aging; Irene Hooper with the Golden Age Center; Kyle Johnson, grading contractor; and Charles Hager, general contractor.
CULLOWHEE VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT'S....26th annual Eastern-style barbecue dinner will be served this Saturday, Oct. 26, from 4-8 p.m. at Cullowhee Valley School Cafeteria. All plates are $6. Shaking hands with all the politicians in attendance is still free.
FROM BARBECUE TO BRATWURST...- Both Soul Infusion and SoHo Grill and Racquet Club will celebrate Octoberfest this weekend:SOUL INFUSION in Sylva will offer an Octoberfest dinner from 9 p.m. until midnight Friday and Saturday, Oct. 25 and 26. On Friday, Candlewyck will promote their award-winning CD; on Saturday DJ Jason Kay will spin late-night dinner music. SUGAR BARNES will bring her sweet sounds to SoHo in Cullowhee from 7-9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25. Then on Saturday evening, Oct. 26, beginning at 5 p.m. diners can sample German fare - with a southern twist.
THIS IS THE LAST WEEK...to see local favorite Sean Bridgers starring in "Sweet Home Alabama" at the Quin Theaters.
Halloween may not have...arrived just yet, but plans are already under way for this year's Christmas parade in downtown Sylva. Parade organizer Betty Foxx has reported that this year's theme is "The Lights of the Season"; the route will be the same as last year; the date is Tuesday, Dec. 3; and the whole thing gets started at 7 p.m. Those interested in participating are urged to call Betty ASAP at either 586-2512 or 586-6777.
Life Scout Matt Welsh....was mistakenly left out of a picture and write up of Boy Scout Troop 914's High Adventure trip to Florida this summer. Sorry about that, Matt.
TWO OR THREE HANDYMEN VOLUNTEERS...familiar with small power tools are needed to assist in the construction of a 52-foot wheel chair ramp in the Slabtown area of Cashiers. Days needed are Tuesday through Thursday, Oct. 29-31, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call the Department on Aging at 586-8562 if you know someone who fits the bill.
JACKSON COUNTY VISUAL ARTS ASSOCIATION ...will sponsor a day trip to the High Art Museum in Atlanta Saturday, Nov. 30, not Sunday as was reported last week. The museum's featured exhibit is "Paris in the Age of Impressionism." Cost of the trip is $30. Call Ray Menze at 293-3407 for more information and to make your reservations.
THE CAT'S KILN,contemporary paint-on-pottery studio, is now open. Come and select from more than 100 different pieces of white pottery - everything from plates to vases to serving platters. Use their paints, stencils, stamps and idea book for your creations which will be glazed, fired and returned in about a week. Owners Shannon Ridenour and Mary-Kim Shurina invite you to visit their eclectic studio Tuesday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 1-6 p.m. in the former Blue Squirrel Cafe in Cullowhee. City Lights Bookstore...will host an "Unfortunate Event" this Saturday, Oct. 26, at 11 a.m. to celebrate the upcoming ninth book in the Unfortunate Events series by author Lemony Snicket titled "The Carnivorous Carnival." Disguises/costumes are welcome. Snacks, games and prizes will be featured.
