IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN...

the movie shot in 1951 during the Jackson County Centennial, you still have a couple of chances. The 25-minute film will be shown twice Tuesday, Oct. 23, at 7 and 7:30 p.m. at Sylva's Golden Age Center.

GARY GUNTER...

along with his sons - Scott, 32, Billy Ray, 28,and 21-year-old twins Jeremiah and Patrick - are the new owners of Sylva Auto Parts on West Main Street next to Smith's Body Shop. The Gunters carry a complete line of Car Quest auto parts in addition to a selection of new and used Harley-Davidson parts. Sylva Auto Parts offers delivery in Sylva, Cullowhee, Cherokee and Bryson City. Gary began his career in the auto parts business in 1971 when he joined his brother at Rod's Auto Parts. The best part of owning the store, Gary said, is working with all four of his sons.

THE ANNUAL POOR MAN'S LUNCH...

at Sylva Methodist Church will be Friday, Oct. 26, from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. The menu will include pinto beans, cornbread, coleslaw, potatoes, dessert and drink. The event is sponsored by the church's Methodist Men.


SYLVA STORYTELLER GARY CARDEN...

will present a free program at the Jackson County Public Library Friday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m. The library's telephone number was listed incorrectly in last week's newspaper. For information on the Carden program, call 586-2016.


CITY LIGHTS...

will hold a used book sale all day Saturday, Oct. 20, during Jackson County's downtown Sesquicentennial celebration.


SENIOR STRIDERS...

the annual walking program for those age 50 and older, meets daily in the concourse of Western Carolina University's Ramsey Center. The program is free, and miles are recorded daily. Participants find out at the end of the program how far they have walked. Those who walk more than 200 miles qualify for a T-shirt. Participants can register the first day they attend. "Bring a friend and join us as we walk towards a healthier lifestyle," said a spokesman for the Jackson County Recreation and Parks Department, which sponsors the program. SYLVA MAYOR...

Brenda Oliver participated in the N.C. League of Municipalities 2001 annual conference in Asheville earlier this week. Oliver presided during a Tuesday session titled "Religious Uses and the Question of Land Use Regulations." Completing her term on the NCLM board of directors, she was honored for her service. Some 2,000 municipal officials, guests and exhibitors gathered for the conference, which includes a variety of workshops, general sessions and sessions about local governance. Gov. Mike Easley was one of the featured speakers.


FRIENDS AND FAMILY...

ALMOND TWIRLERS...

will host a costume Halloween Dance Thursday, Oct. 25, at 8 p.m. at the old Whittier School. Callers will be Marty Northrup and Gary Monday. A 7 p.m. hot dog supper will precede the dance. For information, call 497-2490.


TUCKASEIGEE...

Baptist Association Senior Adults will take a trip on the new Cherahala Highway Monday, Oct. 22. Any senior adult is welcome to attend. The group will leave at 9 a.m. Those atteding are asked to pack a picnic lunch. On the way back, the group will stop at a restaurant for supper. For information, call Eloise Shuler at 586-6080.

Partnership for Children has announced that its new web site (www.regiona kids.org) is being hosted by Metrostat Technologies at no charge. "By making this significant in-kind contribution, Metrostat Technologies has enabled us to further leverage our resources on behalf of young children and their families in Western North Carolina," commented Region A Partnership Executive Director June Smith. "We appreciate having Metrostat Technologies as a working partner as we endeavor to improve the quality of life for our regionšs children and their families."
