HALLOWEEN NEWS BULLETIN...

The Sylva Herald plans to feature Halloween news and events in its Thursday, Oct. 31 edition. To have your spooktacular happening included, be sure your submission is in our newsroom by 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23. WHITTIER COMMUNITY CLUB...

will hold its third annual Maple Leaf Festival Saturday, Oct. 19, on Main Street. Crafters, vendors, musicians and others interested in participating or helping may call Stuff & Such at 497-7589 or 497-2395 (evenings) for more information. The club is seeking flea market items for the sale. Items may be dropped of anytime at Stuff & Such or at the clubhouse on Friday, Oct. 18. Festival rain date is Oct. 26.


TIMES FOR TUCKASEIGEE BAPTIST...

Association's annual meeting were incorrectly listed in last week's newspaper. Business sessions begin at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17, and Friday, Oct. 18. Each day's events start with a meal at 4:30 p.m. provided by the host church - Hamburg Baptist on Thursday and Greens Creek Baptist on Friday.


COUNTRY SINGER MATT STILLWELL

will perform this Saturday, Oct. 18, from 7 to 10 p.m. at Bella Roma in Sylva.


GREENHOUSE...

Restaurant on Main Street is planning a children's fall celebration Sunday, Oct. 20, from 2 until 4 p.m. with fun activities like cookie decorating and face painting. Those wishing to join the party are asked to make a reservation for themselves and their child by calling 586-5065. Each participant is asked to make a $1 donation to cover the cost of supplies.


PAINTINGS BY....

Ellen Lightfoot Hunter of Sylva are currently on display at SoHo Grill and Racquet Club in Cullowhee. A watercolor and mixed-media artist, Hunter paints subjects from nature, particularly wildflowers of the Smokies. The retired educator has participated in juried shows throughout North Carolina and her watercolor "Red-shouldered Hawk" won Best of Show at a competition sponsored by Southwestern Community College.


CHEROKEE ARTIST...

Donald Vann will be hosted by the Great Smokies Fine Arts Gallery in Cherokee for an artist's exhibit and show on Saturday, Oct. 19, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.


TOM HARMON...

of Waynesville was the winner of a hand-pieced quilt that was raffled as a benefit for Chris Lopez, a Sylva man who is awaiting a kidney/pancreas transplant. Local quilters worked on the quilt at Bessie May and Co. on Main Street. A local committee is attempting to raise the $100,000 Lopez will need to cover out-of-pocket expenses connected with the transplant operation. The quilt raffle netted some $950; to date the group has raised about $10,000. Anyone wishing to contribute may send checks made out to National Foundation for Transplants, with a notation "for Chris Lopez" on the check, to Chris Lopez Transplant fund, P.O. Box 716, Sylva, N.C. 28779.


EDWARD JONES

in Sylva will offer free programs Thursday, Nov. 7, at 4 and 6:30 p.m. for investors seeking information on wills, trusts and other estate-planning topics. For more information or to reserve your place at one of the presentations, call 586-2292. In other Edward Jones news, the financial-services firm has been ranked No. 1 among full-service brokers by Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine. The story appeared in the magazine's annual special edition, "Stocks '03" that was published Oct. 1.


LOCAL BUILDERS...

will move their organization's office to the Lake Glenville Business Park, 5015 Hwy. 107 N. near Glenville School Road and the Glenville Post Office by the end of October, said Jackson County Home Builders Association President Susanne Moore. The builders' association meets the first Monday night of each month. For information or membership details, call 743-0178.


ANNE VILEN'S....

sixth-grade class at Mountain Discovery Charter School will be Trick-or-Treating for UNICEF this year. Many students at the new Bryson City school are Jackson County residents, and many of the children will be soliciting donations for the United Nations Children's Emergency Fund in Sylva and Cullowhee. Class reporter Tori O'Neill asks that those approached give as generously as possible since all money collected will go to UNICEF to help with efforts to eliminate polio worldwide and provide food and clean water to children everywhere.


AMANDA HALL...

of Live Oak, Fla., granddaughter of Cline and Mary Hall of Greens Creek, was recently honored at Lake City Christian Academy where she was awarded the prestigious Benaiah Medallion from Bob Jones University. She is the daughter of Tim and Rhonda Hall of Live Oak.


CONGRATULATIONS ...

to Ruth Mosteller of Barkers Creek, who has been chosen to demonstrate clogging in Washington, D.C., according to her great-niece Rhonda Hall of Live Oak, Fla.
