SYLVAS CHRISTMAS PARADE will be Tuesday, Dec. 2, at 7 p.m. Grand marshals will be the children of Jackson County's active military personnel. CULLOWHEE FIREFIGHTERS need donated cakes for their annual barbecue dinner coming up Saturday, Oct. 25. Please deliver cakes to Cullowhee Valley School the day of the event. Owned by Ed and Susan Yashenko, the new store will try to "bring the shore to the mountains" by providing a variety of seafood products. The grand opening will be Saturday, Oct. 18, at 11 a.m. The Yashenkos moved to Jackson County six years ago and have two sons, Kyle, a Smoky Mountain High junior, and TJ, an eighth-grader at Fairview. Tickets are on sale now at the school or at the Jarrett House in Dillsboro and will also be available at the door. Cost is $5 per person. A WESTERN Carolina University veterans' organization is seeking Gold Star Mothers mothers whose sons or daughters have lost their lives while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces to invite as special guests for the university's Veterans' Day observance on Tuesday, Nov. 11. SUPER FLU Saturday - The Jackson County Department of Public Health is recommending that everyone receive a flu shot this year. In order to accommodate all those requesting the flu vaccine, there will be a special clinic Saturday, Oct.18 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. CITY LIGHTS will host the American Girls Club at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, and a special author event for children at 2:30 p.m. Elizabeth Raffa and Annelle Rigsby, authors of the book "Race to Kitty Hawk" (for ages 8 to 12) will be on hand to read from the book and answer children's questions. NATALIE ELDERS of Whittier, who was seriously injured in an April automobile accident near Smokey Mountain Elementary School, wants the entire community to know how grateful she is for all those who have helped her and her family during her long convalescence.
