Marina

MARINA WELCH ROBBINS ....

of Cherokee has joined The Sylva Herald on a full-time basis. Marina will be doing pre-press work, as well as helping with photography, graphics and sales. Two of her photographs have already been published in the newspaper.

She has a degree in commercial art and advertising from Southwestern Community College, studied photography and electronic graphic design at Fitchburg State College, Mass., and studied fine arts at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Sante Fe, as well as Western Carolina University. Known locally for her work as an artist, she has had several shows at the Cherokee Indian Museum. Currently, she is working on an illustrated book of Cherokee legends.


SANDY GILL ...

of Sylva is this week's winner in our "Have Dinner on Us" contest, a part of the Great Smokies Dining Guide. She won a $25 gift certificate to Kentucky Fried Chicken in Sylva. For information about fine area restaurants and to learn how to enter and win, see the dining guide on pages 2C and 3C.


ELDERS SUPERETTE...

located on U.S. 74 West at Barkers Creek, is now open. Owned and operated by Charles and DeWayne Elders, the store offers Exxon gas and products as well as groceries and feed. For information, call 631-9270.


HELP LANDSCAPE...

the new Scotts Creek Elementary School on Saturday, Oct. 13, from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. A free hot dog lunch will be provided by the PTA. Plants have been donated by Lee Crites, Art Pilch, County Road Farms, Smoky Mountain High School's horticulture department and supportive parents and students. Other donations are welcome. WESTCARE FOUNDATION...

will hold its annual fall book fair today (Thursday) from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. in the Harris Regional Hospital lobby. The fair will continue on Friday from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m.


CITY LIGHTS...

will host the second monthly meeting of The American Girls Club Saturday, Oct. 13, at 1 p.m. New members are always welcome. Please bring an oversized button-down shirt (large enough to fit over your clothes) that will be used to make smocks. For more information, call 586-9499.


IN AN EFFORT TO AID...

fellow Americans who were directly impacted by the Sept. 11 attack on the United States, the financial-services firm Edward Jones has announced a $1 million donation, said Graeme McGufficke, local representative.


SCCıs "LEGAL EAGLES"...

paralegal club will sponsor a Lost Loved One Balloon Drive this Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. at Wal-Mart and at Ingles. A second drive will be held from 10 a.m. until noon in the lobby of Oaks Hall on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 15 and 16. Balloons will then be released Oct. 18 at 11 a.m. on the Jackson Campus. Half the proceeds from the $1 donations will go to the families of fallen rescue workers of the Sept. 11 tragedy.

first lady of country music, will play two shows at Harrah's Cherokee Casino, Oct. 18 and 19. Show times are 8 p.m. and tickets are available by calling 1-800-HARRAHS.

The Region A...

Partnership for Children has announced that its new web site (www.regiona kids.org) is being hosted by Metrostat Technologies at no charge. "By making this significant in-kind contribution, Metrostat Technologies has enabled us to further leverage our resources on behalf of young children and their families in Western North Carolina," commented Region A Partnership Executive Director June Smith. "We appreciate having Metrostat Technologies as a working partner as we endeavor to improve the quality of life for our regionıs children and their families."
