CANADA FIRE CHIEF...Steve Luker would like to thank everyone who attended the recent barbecue. Canada firefighters raised more than $10,000, Luker said, which will be used to purchase needed equipment. A special thank you goes to Neil and Peggy Dawson for their culinary expertise, to Smoky Mountain Drive-in for coleslaw, to emcee Jim Ed Powell and to musicians Amanda and Sharon Dills. Luker also expressed appreciation to Jimmy's Mini Market, L.V. Mathis Construction, H&S Drilling and Luker Brothers Drilling for raffle prizes and to Irene Owen and Laverne Marchbanks, who made the quilt that was raffled. Trever Luker won the raffle and Myrtle Queen won the quilt.
WHITTIER COMMUNITY CLUB...will hold its third annual Maple Leaf Festival Saturday, Oct. 19, on Main Street. Crafters, vendors, musicians and others interested in participating or helping may call Stuff & Such at 497-7589 or 497-2395 (evenings) for more information. The club is seeking flea market items for the sale. Items may be dropped of anytime at Stuff & Such or at the clubhouse on Friday, Oct. 18. Festival rain date is Oct. 26.
RICHARD SIMMONS...one of the country's best known fitness experts, will bring his "Sweating to the Oldies" show to Harrah's Cherokee Casino and Hotel Monday, Oct. 20, through Wednesday, Oct. 23. Tickets are on sale now for $10 and are available by calling 1-800-HARRAHS. Show times are 7 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday and 1 p.m. on Wednesday.

MOUNTAIN DISCOVERY...Charter School will hold a rummage and bake sale Saturday, Oct. 12, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. The school is located next to Ingles in Bryson City. Donations will be accepted. For information, call 586-3335. All proceeds will be sed for playground equipment.
PLAN TO ATTEND....Saturday's fall festival at the East LaPorte Masonic Lodge. Fun gets under way with a country breakfast at 7:30 a.m. and continues most of the day. Proceeds will be used to benefit the Masonic/Eastern Star home.
CITY LIGHTS'...American Girls Club will meet this Saturday, Oct. 12, at 1 p.m. New members are always welcome. Please call City Lights at 586-9499 for more information.
THRIFTY TABLE...the new thrift store at the Community Table, is now open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 2 to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. Items such as linens, toys, and kitchen items are available and donations continue to be accepted. No clothes, please. All proceeds go to the Community Table to help feed the hungry in Jackson County.
