EXTRA COPIES ...of The Sylva Herald's commemorative Sesquicentennial Section will be available this Sunday during the downtown Heritage Parade. Gospel music begins at 2 p.m., and the parade, featuring horses and horse-drawn vehicles, will follow at 3 p.m.

Henrietta Bradley....of Sylva's Greens Creek community was honored Friday, Sept. 28, upon her retirement from the Cullowhee Post Office. A lifelong resident of Jackson County, she graduated in 1977 from Western Carolina University with a masters in education and taught K-1 at Cherokee Elementary from 1970-86. She began her career with the Postal Service at the Dillsboro Post Office in 1986, then transferred to Cullowhee in 1988, where she remained for the next 13 years. "I've enjoyed working with the public," she said. On Friday, her fellow employees reminded her of the day she came in and put the mail in the refrigerator and mailed her lunch. |
A BLUEGRASS-GOSPEL...Jamboree, set for Saturday, Oct. 13, from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. at Burger Shak, will benefit the Donald Ashe Memorial Scholarship Fund. The Fiddling Dills Sisters, Deitz Family, Willing Servants and many more will be performing throughout the day. For more information, call 586-8571.
VOLUNTEER FIRE...departments from both Jackson and Haywood counties will be on hand to receive donations to aid in the disaster relief drive for New York City and Washington, D.C., during the Balsam Valley Bluegrass Festival. The festival, which will be held from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, at Balsam Valley Flea Market on Old Balsam Road, will be dedicated to the memory of those who lost their lives Sept. 11. The festival will coincide with the grand opening of the Balsam Valley Flea Market.
DARRELL PRUETT...of Sylva has opened Smoky Mountain Gas Log and Propane in the West Sylva Shopping Center near Harold's Supermarket. The new store specializes in back-up heat sources and gas logs, and they install the gas logs they sell. Pruett and his wife, the former, Lisa Bryson, have two daughters, Christy, a senior at Smoky Mountain High, and Tonya, 11, a student a Fairview.

FORMER RESIDENT...David Schulman of Asheville has a feature article on Sylva's Main Street in the September issue of "Our State" magazine. The article focuses on Sylva Partners In Renewal's accomplishments and includes anecdotes of the town's history.
SUPERIOR COURT NEWS...on page 3C is incorrectly labeled "District Court." The Herald regrets the error.
GOODY'S...Family Clothing has announced plans to help victims of the recent terrorist attacks by selling Americana T-shirts and other patriotic items. A portion of the proceeds from the sales of most of this merchandise will be donated to the Sept. 11th Fund, established by the United Way. T-shirts are already in stores, and American flags, car flags, neckwear and lapel pins will be available soon.
Henrietta Bradley...the proceeds from a Saturday, Oct. 6, yard sale will be donated to the Red Cross to benefit victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C. Karen Beathard, Melissa Isley and Kim McFadden of Sylva are the organizers of the sale, which will be held at Dr. LeMay's office (near Sylva Animal Hospital on Business 23) from 8 a.m. until 11:30. The sale will feature children's clothing and toys.
JUST A REMINDER...that Randy Russell and Janet Barnett, authors of "Ghost Dogs of the South," will be at City Lights this Saturday, Oct. 6, at 7 p.m. to read from the book and talk about the dog stories they have collected.
ALMOND TWIRLERS...will host a regular dance at the old Whittier School Thursday, Oct. 11, at 8 p.m. Marty Northrup will be the caller. For information, call 497-2490.
