FARM BUREAU...wants everyone to know Bound By Grace is the name of the group that will provide live music at the agency's Oct. 10 annual meeting. An ad last week incorrectly listed the group as "Boundary Grace."

AREA FIRST CITIZENS BANKS...will celebrate an Amazing Customer Appreciation Day this Friday, Oct. 4. Branches in Sylva and Cherokee will offer free refreshments, hot dog lunches, prize drawings and children's activities as a way of showing appreciation for their customers. Founded in 1898, First Citizens operates some 342 branches in North Carolina.
THE OAK RIDGE BOYS...will appear in concert at Harrah's Cherokee Casino Thursday, Oct. 10, at 8 p.m. Celebrating 25 years in country music, the Oaks' high-energy show remains the heart and soul of what they do. Live performances are packed with No. 1 songs like "Elvira," "American Made" and "Gonna Take a Lot of River." Tickets to the Oak Ridge Boys' show are available now by calling 1-800-HARRAHS.
DAVID SCHULMAN...of Asheville, formerly of Sylva, has written an article on Sylva that will be posted on the N.C. Division of Travel, Film and Sports Development's October website. Schulman wrote the piece for the September 2001 issue of Our State magazine. The former Sylva retailer will also have feature articles in Our State's upcoming November and December issues. Schulman will read from his current works of fiction at Malaprop's in Asheville on Sunday, Oct. 20.
SYLVA FIRE....Department will hold an open house Saturday, Oct. 12, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. The event is planned as part of the observance of National Fire Prevention Week. Activities will include demonstrations of fire equipment, tours of the station and trucks and a participatory Smoke House. Also available will be pamphlets and brochures pertaining to home safety, drinks, balloons, candy and door prizes. Special guests will include Sparky the Fire Dog and Smokey Bear, members of WestCare EMS and N.C. Forest Service personnel. Everyone is invited especially children.
U.S. REPRESENTATIVE...Todd Tiahrt (R-Kansas) announced recently that Smoky Mountain High graduate Hannah Woody has been promoted to legislative correspondent. Woody, 23, is a Cullowhee native and a graduate of Gardner-Webb University, where she was student body president. She was named the 2000-01 Alumnus of the Future, as well as Most Outstanding Student."I am thrilled to promote Hannah," said Tiahrt. "She has proven herself to be an excellent member of my staff, and I am pleased she has chosen to accept this position." Woody is the daughter of Phil and Gayle Woody of Cullowhee.
DEMOCRAT MEN...will hold a barbecue at East LaPorte River Access Park Saturday, Oct. 12, from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased from Democrat candidates. Democrats will hold open house at their party headquarters on N.C. 107 in the old Scooters location Saturday, Oct. 5.
WESTCARE....Health System Foundation will hold its annual Fall Book Fair in the second floor family room at Mountain Trace Nursing Center Wednesday, Oct. 16, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and in Harris Regional Hospital's lobby Thursday, Oct. 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday, Oct. 18, from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m.The book fair is a wonderful opportunity to begin your holiday shopping, said Michele Garashi of WestCare's foundation. Books Are Fun Limited will provide buyers with a wide variety of selections for adults and children at savings up to 70 percent off the retail price. A portion of the proceeds go to benefit the foundation, supporting projects and programs that serve the residents of Western North Carolina. For additional information, call Garashi at 586-7669.
PUMPKINS ARE IN...at Sylva First Methodist Church and will be on sale throughout October. The pumpkin patch is open seven days a week, said church youth director Linda Haggard.
