DO YOU KNOW ...

an older person who has had a serious fall in their home, perhaps resulting in a broken hip or other injury? Does the thought of a fire in the home of an older family member send shock waves through you? Or have you ever been the victim of a fall or fire? Fear of falling and fear of home fires are real fears for older adults - and with good reason. Each year around 7,000 older adults die as a result of accidental falls in their homes and 1,000 die in their homes as the result of fire or burns. Preventing those falls and fires will be the topic of a special program presented by the Cooperative Extension Service and AARP Wednesday, Oct. 11, at the Golden Age Senior Center in Sylva. Titled "Remembering When," the 1.5-hour-long program will use nostalgic games, demonstrations and trivia quizzes to encourage older adults to be proactive in preventing accidents and fires in the home. The program begins at 10 a.m. There is no charge for the program. For additional information and to register to attend, call Delia Temple at 293-9715 by Oct. 2.
