SYLVA FIREFIGHTERS...

will hold their annual Fire Prevention Week open house Saturday, Oct. 13, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Fire Prevention Week is Oct. 7-14. The special week has its roots in the Great Chicago Fire, which began Oct. 8, 1871, and lasted 27 hours. That fire killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless and destroyed more than 17,400 structures. Though the origin of the fire has never been determined, there has been much speculation over how it began. One popular legend was that Catherine O'Leary was milking her cow when the animal kicked over a lamp, setting the O'Leary's barn on fire and starting the spectacular blaze.
