WESTERN CAROLINA UNIVERSITY Chancellor John Bardo will be William Friday's guest Friday, Sept. 26, on the UNC-TV show "North Carolina People." Tune in at 9 p.m. to watch the interview filmed last Friday in Cullowhee. THE CULLOWHEE Staffed Recycling Center will be closed Tuesday, Sept. 30, for paving, according to Chad Parker of the Jackson County solid waste department. HILLTOP GAS AND GROCERY on U.S. 74 between Sylva and Balsam is now under new ownership. Leslie Finney is now operating the BP gas station and convenience store. He's restocked the shelves and added new merchandise. A tire shop offering new tire sales and installation is also open, and Finney is still in the process of remodeling and expanding. FRIENDS AND FAMILY of the late Melanie Thompson will meet at Webster Baptist Church at noon Saturday, Sept. 27, to pick up trash as part of the Adopt-A-Highway program. Vests, gloves, trash bags and water will be provided. "Currently there are more than a 1,000 'In Memory of' AAH groups," said spokesman Kathy Thompson. to participate in the Patriot's Pen essay contest sponsored by Jimmy
Dillard Post 10685 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars for seventh- and
eighth-graders and the Voice of Democracy scholarship program for high
school students. Post 10685 will also serve as Jackson County clearing
house for nominations for the VFW's national Citizenship Education Teacher

Ambassadors from the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce joined Happy Valley Farms recently for a grand opening celebration and ribbon cutting. Owned by Doyle and Janet Mull, Happy Valley grows hydroponic tomatoes and is open seven days a week. The farm is located on Leatherwood Road just off U.S. 441 south of Dillsboro. |
