Railroad will add winter excursions to its schedule, beginning in January. In the past the tourist train has operated March through December. Visitors who ride during the winter will travel in enclosed, heated comfort in the railroad's restored vintage coach and club cars. is sponsoring a poster contest for all school-aged children. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and the poster contest will tie in with other activities planned for the month. The theme for the contest is "Students Taking a Stand Against Domestic Violence," and the deadline for entries is 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 16. Posters will be judged by the Jackson County Arts Council. Prizes will be awarded in three categories: Grades K-5; grades 6-8; and grades 9-12. Home-schoolers are eligible as well.

will hold book fairs Wednesday, Sept. 27, at Mountain Trace and Thursday and Friday, Sept. 28-29, at Harris Regional Hospital. The Mountain Trace fair will be in the second-floor family room from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The hospital's two-day fair will be held in the lobby from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursday and from 7 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday. The fairs will offer a wide selection of books for adults and children at a savings of up to 70 percent off the retail price. A portion of the proceeds will go to benefit WestCare Health System Foundation. It's a great place to begin Christmas shopping, a hospital spokesman said. Donations are needed due to a critical nationwide blood shortage, the American Red Cross announced today. In the Carolinas region, which includes Jackson County, has less than a day's supply of Types O, A and B. Those who can donate at the Asheville Area Blood Center are asked to call 1-800-4483-5433 (1-800-GIVE LIFE). The next local opportunity to donate is Thursday, Sept. 28, at the Red Cross office on Main Street from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Call the local office at 586-2019 weekdays from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. for more information.

largest annual mailing will take place this month and next when more than 34 million copies of the "Medicare & You" 2001 handbook will be mailed to Medicare beneficiaries all across the nation. The book will provide the most up-to-date, comprehensive Medicare information available from the Health Care Financing Administration. The handbook is one of the primary tools used by HCFA to inform seniors and people with disabilities about their Medicare benefits, rights and responsibilities.
