A SATURDAY YARD SALE
at Smoky Mountain High Saturday, Sept. 16, from 8 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. will benefit the school's senior class. Community members may rent tables for $10. Call 586-4630.

wants to say "thank you" to the many parents who volunteered so generously and made the recent taco salad dinner and silent auction a success. More than 700 were served, and the auction alone generated more than $1,000 for the benefit of the students. The group also expressed its thanks to area businesses that contributed food as well as auction donations. Through everyone's hard work, the proceeds totaled $4,000!
A DOZEN PROFESSIONAL ...
appraisers from several states will be at Western Carolina University's Ramsey Center this weekend for the Jackson County Community Foundation's appraisal fair from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Local participants include Howard Alligood, owner and operator of Arsenal Artifacts in Sylva, an authority on Confederate artillery who specializes in Civil War artifacts; auctioneer John Bunn of Sylva, who has worked with estate auctions for 26 years, and his son, Raymond, a builder of customs guns who owns Bunn's Guns of Sylva; Tommy Beutell of Tuckasegee, who has 25 years experience as a specialist in Native American artifacts; Steve Dennis, owner of Hollifield's Jewelers of Sylva; and Marion Jones of Sylva, a collector and dealer of primitives who specializes in old tools and toys. Fees for the fair are $15 for one item or $20 for two with proceeds going to the Community Foundation. For more information, call 293-5670.

Philip Pullman's much-awaited third book of his trilogy will be released next month. City Lights has won 10 advance, pre-publication copies of the book to be given away at an event at the store on Saturday, Sept. 16, at 2 p.m. The trilogy's first two books, "The Golden Compass" and "The Subtle Knife," have been popular with the legions of Harry Potter fans. The event will include giveaways of the third book, "The Amber Spyglass." If you are not yet familiar with Pullman and his work, this is your chance to check it out. Besides, the next Harry Potter won't be out until late 2001. For more information, call City Lights at 586-9499.
ERIC KOOL ...
of Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif., has won another national award from the American Chemical Society. He was honored for his innovative research on how DNA makes copies of itself, receiving the Arthur C. Cope Scholar Award for the year 2000. That award consists of $5,000, a certificate, and a $40,000 unrestricted research grant. Earlier this year Kool received the Pfizer Award in Enzyme Chemistry from the Division of Biological Chemistry of the American Chemical Society. The son of Dean and Shirley Kool of Sylva, Kool received his bachelor's in chemistry from Miami University (Ohio) and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Columbia University. After postdoctoral studies at California Institute of Technology, he joined the chemistry department faculty at the University of Rochester, where he taught from 1990-1999. He joined Stanford as professor of chemistry in 1999.

will once again sponsor a fall window painting event in October, just in time for Western Carolina University's homecoming parade on Main Street. Any civic group or organization who would be willing to decorate downtown businesses for fall is asked to Judy LaPoint at Judy's Bridal and Formal Wear at 631-3177. Painting will take place Friday and Saturday, Oct. 12 and 13.
