PAT SCHARLING....

of Sylva is the winner of this newspaper's "Have Dinner On Us" contest, a part of our Great Smokies Dining Guide. Scharling won a $25 gift certificate to Cheang Chinese and Japanese Cuisine, which is located in the Wal-Mart shopping center. For information on how you can enter our contest, see pages 4 and 5C.


WAL-MART...

Supercenter will hold a "Grand Re-opening" Tuesday, Sept. 10, beginning at 8 a.m. Community members are invited to stop by, enjoy a piece of cake and help Wal-Mart staff celebrate the newly remodeled store.


BOBBY GUNTER,..

formerly of Country Collections Corp., and his wife, Sandy, have started a new trash and recycling company, Gunter Enterprises.


YOUTH GROUPS...

at Webster Baptist Church will host a booster seat clinic Saturday, Sept. 7, from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the Wal-Mart parking lot. Booster seats will be provided for a $5 donation and will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Donations will go toward the church's youth group ministries.


DOGWOOD CRAFTERS...

will hold a series of craft demonstrations this Saturday, Sept. 7, from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Crafts featured will include soapmaking, knitting, jewelry-making and pine-needle baskets.


EVERYONE IS...

invited to eat free barbeque Friday, Sept. 6, at the Community Service Center and meet Jimmy Ashe, Democratic candidate for Jackson County sheriff. The event will also include live bluegrass and gospel music.


ST. JOHNS...

Episcopal Church Women will extend their yearly attic sale to Saturday, Sept. 7, at Hastings House from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. Once again, there will be a variety of useful items at low prices.


CITY LIGHTS...

will host a children's storytime Saturday, Sept. 7, at 11 a.m. in honor of the popular "Mouse" book series by Laura Numeroff. The newest title by the author of "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie" is "If You Take a Mouse to School." In honor of the new book, children and their parents will not only get a cookie and hear the book, they'll also get to meet the main character. For information, call City Lights at 586-9499.


THE HUMANE...

Society of Jackson County will sponsor a Cat Adoption Day Sunday, Sept. 8, from 1-6 p.m. at the Pet Shop on Mill Street. Adult cats and kittens will be available. Adoption fees are $60 or $90 for two, which includes spay or neuter, de-worming, leukemia testing, flea treatment and up-to-date vaccinations. All cat supplies will be 20 percent off that day.

Featured will be The Wondertones tonight (Thursday); David Street (dulcimer players and singers) Sept. 12; Doug Trantham Family Sept. 19; Ann and Rob Lough Sept. 26; The Dowden Sisters Oct. 3; French Kirkpatrick Band Oct. 10; Sentimental Duo featuring Gloria McCabe and Robert Akers Oct. 17; and the McDowell Family Oct. 24. Performers for Oct. 31 will be announced.
