CITY LIGHTS...

Bookstore will host two authors this weekend with ties to the Franklin area. First, on Friday, Aug. 23, at 7:30 p.m., former Franklin resident Gwendoline Fortune will be on hand to read from her recent novel, "Growing Up Nigger Rich."

Born to a family of relative privilege, the fictional Gayla Tyner grew up in the 1950s as a member of the black upper class, daughter of well-educated, propertied, medical professionals. But in other places and in other contexts, she found herself labeled "just a nigger." Even within parts of her own community, she was called "nigger rich" a term of both envy and derision. As an adult living in the North, Gayla must come to terms with the South and all it has meant in her life.

On Saturday, Aug. 24, at 7:30 p.m., City Lights will host Londa Woody of Franklin, who will be on hand to discuss a subject near and dear to her: the old-time general store. Woody is devoted to these old stores and has done a tremendous amount of research about those that were (and the few that still are) located in Macon County.

She will be discuss her recent book, "All in a Day's Work: Historic General Stores of Macon and Surrounding North Carolina Counties," which includes sketches of many of the stores and anecdotes and remembrances about their heyday, as well as the location and history of each.

For more information about these events, call City Lights at 586-9499.
