CAREY KING, who grew up in New Bern and graduated from both Wake Forest and Harvard, is a new intern at The Sylva Herald. King, who taught in southern Louisiana for two years with Teach for America before earning her master's in education at Harvard, has decided to give community journalism a try. "I'm interested in community life and the ways journalism can foster community," she said. She first discovered The Sylva Herald online, she said, and her interest was sparked by the inclusion of "Ruralite," The Herald's forerunner, in our masthead. She fell in love with Sylva during a May visit, and says she's delighted to be working at the paper. She's already covered a Sylva town board meeting, and her first byline is in this week's edition.
