TWENTY-FIVE ...

years ago, a group of nine crafters met to pursue the possibility of starting a craft cooperative they came to call Dogwood Crafters.

With the help of a bicentennial grant, landlord Wade Wilson, dedicated hard work by its members and loyal customers, their vision today is a reality.

The working members are responsible for all the duties required to keep the doors open at Dogwood Crafters. The fiscal costs of operating the business are generated from the percentages taken from the sales of crafts. There has been only one paid employee over the years and because of the cooperation of the crafters, this growth has evolved.

Slowly, Dogwood Crafters added members, expanded, computerized and has arrived at an interesting mix of artisans. Traditional and contemporary crafts can be found within their vintage log cabin walls. The members are dedicated to the promotion and preservation of Appalachian handmade crafts through sales, classes and awarding scholarships to students in the field of arts and crafts.

The shop is a constantly changing variety of items limited only by the imagination of the 100 artisans who make Dogwood Crafters a showcase of mountain crafts.

A day of celebration has been designated for Sunday, Aug. 26. In appreciation, Dogwood Crafters invites past members, customers, friends, family and the public to come and help enjoy the memories of the past 25 years. There will be entertainment, refreshments and handmade door prizes.

The festivities will be held from 2 until 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 26, at Dogwood Crafters, 90 Webster Street, Dillsboro.
