HERITAGE APPLE...

expert Tom Brown of Clemmons was in Jackson County last week and reports he has leads on a number of interesting apple varieties. Among the old apples he learned were present in the county are Green Horse, Rose Bud, Haywood Black, Tough Hide, Green Buff, Orange Pippin, Lady Skin, Biscuit, Golden Pippin, Hollow Apple, Camack, Stump of the World and Juicy Sweet. He also learned that the complete name of Jackson County's Morgan apple is the Granny Morgan. Brown is interested in hearing from local residents who have old varieties of apple trees. NORTH CAROLINA'S...

Department of Revenue will hold a sales tax holiday Friday, Aug. 2, through Sunday, Aug. 4, on purchases of clothing; clothing accessories including jewelry, cosmetics, eyewear, wallets and watches; protective equipment; and sports and recreational equipment, including ballet shoes, cleated athletic shoes, shin guards and ski boots. Several local merchants are offering back-to-school sales in conjunction with the state's tax holiday. See their ads for details.


WESTERN CAROLINA...

University's office of student affairs and department of music are planning to mark the one-year anniversary of the terrorist attacks on America with a series of observances and tributes Wednesday, Sept. 11, culminating in a concert titled "Music for Heroes." Organizers of the event are seeking Western North Carolinians who were directly impacted by the events of Sept. 11 to attend this day of tributes and remembrances.

"We want to invite members of the WNC community who were touched directly by the tragedy of 9-11 to take part in our tribute and be recognized," said Mary Kay Bauer, associate professor of music and one of the tribute organizers. "We want to honor not just the memories of that horrible day, but we also want to honor the courage and commitment of those who survived." main offices in both Sylva and Waynesville will be closed from noon to 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 2, to allow the organization to express appreciation to its staff.


HEIDI MCCLURE,...

a student at Georgia Baptist College of Nursing, earned a spot on the dean's list by achieving a 4.0 grade-point average during the 2001-02 school term. McClure is the daughter of Terry and Ann McClure of Lilburn, Ga., and the granddaughter of Nettie McClure of Sylva's Willets community.


Schulman Schulman

NATHAN SCHULMAN...

son of David and Denissa Schulman of Asheville and a former Sylva resident, has been awarded the Frances Larkin McCommon Scholarship to attend Savannah Collge of Art and Design. The $7,500-per-year grant is awarded by the college to a limited number of accepted students demonstrating superior artistic ability through portfolio presentation. Schulman plans to major in graphic design. He is the grandson of Sol Schulman of Sylva and the late Lillian Schulman and Clyde and Barbara Andrews of Cullowhee.
