Haire, who served as Sylva town attorney for some 30 years before being elected to the N.C. House of Representatives, is a partner in the Sylva law firm of Haire, Bridgers and Ridenour. He earned both his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and served on the U.S. Senate Select Committee during Watergate.

Gardens near Franklin will hold its 19th annual Lotus Flower Festival Sunday, July 1, through Wednesday, July 4. The 14-acre water garden will exhibit more than 170 varieties of water lilies and lotuses in reds, pinks, yellows, oranges, blues, violets and purples. of Cullowhee will begin performing acoustic classical and jazz guitar music at Bella Roma's on Monday, July 2. Lauren attended Smoky Mountain High and holds a degree in classical guitar from the University of North Carolina at Asheville. Along with her classical background, she incorporates jazz, Afro-Cuban and funk into her performances.

Band will perform during Miss Lucy's Picnic Sunday, July 1, an event that kicks off the Webster Historical Society's "Summer Evenings in Webster" series. The annual picnic, begun in 1946 by Miss Lucy Hedden to celebrate victory in World War II, begins at 4:30 p.m. Everyone is asked to bring a covered dish and a lawn chair to the Moore house, home of Sue Monroe on Webster Road next to the Webster Post Office. The Deitz Family Band will also perform.
UP ONE SIDE ...
and down the other. That's the route Bob Hall will take participants as they leisurely stroll down Sylva's Main Street Friday, June 29. Bob, 78, will describe what Sylva was like when he was a young boy growing up on Keener Street, just two doors down from John Parris. Participants are asked to gather at the old Jackson County Courthouse fountain at 7 p.m. for this Sesquicentennial event sponsored by the Jackson County Historical Association.
