FOR THOSE WHO'D like to take in a show before Friday's fireworks, Western Carolina University's production of "Steel Magnolias" begins at 7:30 p.m. and runs about an hour and 40 minutes, which should give theater-goers ample time to make it to Main Street for the fireworks display at dark. For tickets, call the communication and theater arts department at 227-7491. REACH of Jackson County is in need of crisis hotline volunteers. Training and pagers will be provided. If interested, call Kathy at 586-8969. SOUL INFUSION Tea House in Sylva celebrated its second anniversary this past weekend with a musical benefit for Sharecroppers, the Community Table's new non-profit organic community garden. Jason and Karin Kimenker, proprietors of Soul Infusion, presented James Stewart of AmeriCorps/VISTA with a check and donations totaling $435 to benefit Sharecroppers. The June 27 event featured an evening of family entertainment with music by Frank Lee of The Freighthoppers, Marshall Ballew of WNCW, guys from the Saw Mill Creek Porch Band and many other local musicians. "We were extremely pleased with the community support to celebrate our anniversary and to benefit the Sharecroppers," said Jason Kimenker. "Sharecroppers represents a great community bond and a wonderful addition to Jackson County. We hope to provide Soul Infusion as a venue for other benefit shows in the near future." For information about hosting a benefit show at Soul Infusion, call the tea house at 586-1717 or visit online at www.soulinfusion.com. TO DATE, 25 churches, along with several families have contributed some $34,026 toward the goal of placing the Jesus Video on the life of Jesus Christ in every home in Jackson County. Churches and families are invited to participate in the project by mailing gifts to Jackson County Jesus Video Project, P.O. Box 222, Sylva, N.C. 28779. VETERANS' NEWS: Public Law 107-3133 eliminated the disability offset to retired pay for certain military retirees. The name of the program is Combat-related Special Compensation. If you are a retired military member with 20 years of service for retired pay computation and who either have disabilities because of combat injuries for which you have been awarded the Purple Heart or who are rated at least 60 percent disabled because of armed conflict, hazardous duty, training exercises, mishaps involving military equipment, or exposed to Agent Orange, you may qualify. Also, a retired reservist whose retirement was based on points only, who has 7,200 points or more for the computation of retired pay, may be eligible for this benefit. To take part, you must apply to your own branch of service using DD Form 2680. Forms are available at the Jackson County Veterans Office, where personnel can assist you in submitting applications. Contact Veterans Service Officer Russ Bauer at 586-7596. "Veterans are our most precious resource."
