was the winner of the gun safe valued at $1,000 that was donated by Gary Epling, owner of A-1 Precision Lock & Safe. The safe was raffled during Kids SuperSaturday as a fund-raiser for the Jackson County Recreation and Parks Department. Proceeds from the raffle went toward purchasing equipment for the new Jackson County Recreation Center in Cullowhee.

FIRST CITIZENS ...
held its summer hot dog cookout at the bank in Sylva. Business customers were invited to join the bank staff after hours for hot dogs and giveaways. More than 40 businesses were represented at the event, which a First Citizens spokesman described as a way of thanking business customers and providing an opportunity to socialize in a less formal setting.
LOCAL EDWARD JONES ...
investment representative Graeme McGufficke will host a course titled "Tax Reform 2001" at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 28, for area certified public accountants and attorneys. The program, eligible for three CPE hours for CPAs and accountants, will be broadcast via the Edward Jones satellite system. Cost is $50, and reservations are required.
