WHITTIER'S ANNUAL DAISY DAZE....

Festival was rained out last weekend and will be this Saturday, June 14, on Main Street in Whittier from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. The festival will feature artists and crafters, a yard sale and flea market, live musicians and a hot dog lunch. All proceeds will benefit New Century Scholars and the Whittier Heritage Exhibit. Sponsors are the Whittier Community Development Club and Stuff & Such. NANCY P. COWARD...

of Webster reported that last Friday's World Hunger Luncheon at First Baptist Church raised $3,310. That means that at least $1,100 will go to the local United Christian Ministries and $2,200 will go to organizations to feed the hungry elsewhere in the U.S. and abroad. Coward expressed gratitude to all those who donated food for the event and to all who cooked, served and cleaned up.

in Cullowhee will present a live radio broadcast on WRGC Friday, June 13, from 6 until 9 p.m. Kelly and Kelly Timco will provide live dinner music from 7 to 9 p.m.


MEMBERS...

of the Smoky Mountain High Class of 1993 are planning their 10th-year reunion and say address changes are making it difficult to get in touch with a number of classmates. The reunion is planned for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, July 26, at the Great Smokies Center in Cherokee. Cost is $40, and the money should be sent to Pam Sumner, P.O. HOMESCHOOLERS...

in Jackson County are meeting on Fridays at 10 a.m. at Poteet Park in Sylva. If you are a homeschooler or are interested in learning more about homeschooling and meeting some new friends, bring your lunch and bathing suit (if it's warm), and join them. FORMER CULLOWHEE RESIDENT...

Angie Austin was recently named Teacher of the Year for Watauga County schools. An N.C. Teaching Fellow graduate of Appalachian State University, Austin is the daughter of Fred Harris and Linda Allen, both of Cullowhee. Austin is a third-grade teacher at Green Valley Elementary, where she has taught for the past 11 years. Green Valley Principal Don Saunders described Austin as "a teacher who cares for every student, and who is willing to go up against anyone, including me, to get what a student needs."

TO PROMOTE...

dental health, the Jackson County Department of Public Health's Dental Program will host an open house today (Thursday) from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Dental Resource Center at the health department. All parents of children who have not had a dental screening in the last six months are invited to bring their children ages 0-5 for a free dental exam and fluoride varnish. No appointment is necessary; walk-ins are welcome. For information, call the dental program at 586-8994, Ext. 273.


HEIDI MCCLURE...

granddaughter of Nettie McClure of Willets community, was named to the dean's list at Georgia Baptist College of Nursing at Mercer University in Atlanta. She is the daughter of Terry and Ann McClure of Lilburn, Ga.

Industrial and Chemical Supplies of Minnesota has opened a branch in the Balsam area. Western Carolina graduate Brandon Clayton is general manager. A STORY...

in last week's edition about a new program that allows developmentally-challenged adults to share their educational experiences with teachers failed to mention that the symposium is sponsored by the Mountain Connections II: Research to Practice Project through WCU.


WCU A grand opening for Curves For Women was held last week, and Jackson County Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors welcomed the new business to the county. Curves is a 30-minute fitness and weight-loss center located at 73 W. Main Street in Sylva and is open daily for fitness and fun. Call 631-4440 for more information.

WCU Dillsboro Crossing townhouses are now available. Jackson County Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors were on site recently to help celebrate the opening of the Dillsboro development. Models are open to the public on Saturday and Sunday or by appointment. Call 586-9770 for additional information.
