is planning a customer appreciation celebration Friday and Saturday, June 8 and 9. The celebration will include free hot dogs on Friday and barbecue on Saturday. Sylva's own Matt Stillwell will perform at the store on Saturday.
THE SUMMER READING PROGRAM ...
sponsored by the Jackson County Public Library will begin Friday, June 11, with a registration and kickoff event from 1 to 3 p.m. in Bicentennial Park on Keener Street in Sylva. Miss Donna, the Balloon Lady, will perform at 2 p.m. Groups will meet each week through July 2. Grades 1-3 will meet Thursdays from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.; grades 4-6 will meet Thursdays from 2 to 3 p.m.; and preschool-kindergarten will meet Fridays from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. The programs finale, also at Bicentennial Park, will be from 2 to 3 p.m. Thursday, July 12 and will feature storyteller Ron Jones.
JACKSON COUNTY'S ...
Rescue Squad's fund-raising drive includes an opportunity for professional portraits. Donations of more than $25 entitles the donor to a free 10x13 portrait, with other photographs available. The squad gets a percentage of all portrait sales. Representatives of the photography studio are currently calling county residents to explain the offer and the benefits to the Rescue Squad.
MARK MARTIN ...
formerly of Cullowhee, an associate justice of the N.C. Supreme Court, is one of 40 emerging state leaders from across the nation selected for the prestigious Toll Fellowship Program sponsored by The Council of State Governments in August. The annual weeklong seminar is aimed at developing the next generation of leaders from all three branches of state government.
TICKETS ARE ON SALE ...
now for chances on a beautiful handmade quilt donated to the Church of the Good Shepherd in Cashiers. The quilt will be one of several items in a raffle that also includes a handmade nativity scene and a chainsaw. Donations of items to sell at the church's annual bazaar are still needed. If you have items to donate, you may call the church office at 743-2359.
The bazaar is set for Saturday, July 14, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Both breakfast and lunch will be served and homemade goodies will be available all day.
Proceeds from the bazaar is given back to local communities through the church's outreach program. Recent recipients include: AWAKE, Blue Ridge School, REACH and the Cashiers Community Center.
BRANDY WOODS ...
of Elko, Nev., was awarded the Silver "E" for academic excellence during recent graduation exercises at Elko Senior High. She also received the Nevada Millennium Scholarship, which carries a five-year stipend. Woods has been accepted at the University of Nevada in Reno. She is the daughter of Mitch and Catherine Woods of Elko and granddaughter of Louise Campbell and Patick and Mary Ellen Montague of Sylva.
