Scheduled for Friday and Saturday, June 14-15, the festival of live jazz and fine arts and crafts will feature nationally known performers The Manhattan Transfer, David Sanborn, Joe Sample and Bio Ritmo. Tickets are on sale now at the Ramsey Center ticket office and at several area chambers of commerce, including chamber offices in Sylva and Cashiers. HELP FEED THE HUNGRY...

by coming to the Poor Man's Luncheon at Sylva First Baptist Church Friday, June 7, from 11 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. The cost is $5, and take-out meals will be available. Call 586-2095 to have orders ready for pick up. Most of the proceeds (60 percent) will go to international hunger relief; the remaining 40 percent will go to the local United Christian Ministries.


THE 28th ANNUAL...

North Carolina State Bluegrass Festival (formerly the Dahlonegah Bluegrass Festival) will take place at Happy Holiday Campground in Cherokee Thursday through Saturday, June 20-22. Headlining the three-day event will be the legendary Ralph Stanley, who won three Grammy Awards earlier this year. Also set to play are Charlie Waller and the Country Gentlemen, Jim & Jesse and the Virginia Boys and Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver. Shows will go on rain or shine; tickets will be available at the gate. Daily admission is $30; three-day passes are $80. For information, call the campground at 497-2750.


A NEW HALF-DAY...

preschool will open June 24 at New Hope Baptist Church, located on Old Settlement Road. Bright Beginnings Preschool will hold registration Thursday and Friday, June 13 and 14, in the church fellowship hall. LOCAL TELEVISION...

viewers will have a unique opportunity Tuesday, June 11, to learn about and show their support for Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Now in its eighth year, the Friends Across the Mountains broadcast will take place from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. on WLOS-TV Channel 13 in Asheville. Viewers will learn about park resources, projects, and programs, and they can also call in to pledge their financial support for Friends of Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

"This broadcast provides a great chance to learn more about this tremendous national resource that's right in our own backyard," said Jim Hart, executive director for Friends of the Smokies. "We are very thankful for the generous financial support that viewers provide each year to help the park."

Individuals and business owners can call a toll-free telephone number during the broadcast and make a pledge; they can donate online at www.friendsofthesmokies.org; or they can call and ask for a donation form to be mailed to them.
