BLUEGRASS IN CHEROKEE....The 29th annual N.C. State Bluegrass Festival (formerly Dahlonega Bluegrass Festival) will be held at Happy Holiday Campground in Cherokee Thursday-Saturday, June 19-21, beginning at noon each day with music lasting until 11 p.m. Each day will begin with an open stage at 11 a.m. Thursdayıs headliners are Ralph Stanley, and Charlie Waller. Fridayıs lineup includes Jesse McReynolds and the Virginia Boys, and Saturdayıs show will feature the legendary Doc Watson. CAROLINA CROSS CONNECTION,....a Christian ministry seeking to reach out to those who need assistance in the community, brings together youth and adults from churches all around the state to provide minor home repair, painting, basic construction (like wheel chair ramps), yard work and cleaning to people who need help. Services are free of charge. The group is looking for Jackson County projects that can be completed by participants in this summerıs youth camp in Jackson County. DONıT FORGET DAISY DAZE...in downtown Whittier. The event will be Saturday, June 7, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Whittierıs Main Street. The festival will feature artists and crafters, a yard sale and flea market, live musicans a hot dog lunch. All proceeds will benefit the New Century Scholars and the Whittier Heritage Exhibit. DOGWOOD CRAFTERS...in Dillsboro will host a craft demonstration of shaker boxes by Chris Behre this Saturday, June 7, from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.
A JUNE 9 ...concert at Western Carolina University featuring the Middle-Eastern band Turku that was mentioned on page 10C of this weekıs newspaper has been cancelled.
WESTCARE...Health System Foundation will present its fifth annual Spirit of the Smokies car show from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. (rain or shine) Saturday, June 14, at WestCare Medical Park next to Harris Regional Hospital in Sylva, NC. Trophies will be awarded for ³People's Choice² and ³Law Enforcement Choice.² Awards will also go to the top three vehicles in the following categories: Classic cars, motorcycles, special interest vehicles, modified/street, trucks, street rods. The first 100 to preregister will receive dash plaques. Proceeds benefit WestCareıs foundation. Corporate Sponsors include Harrah's Cherokee Casino, Moody Funeral Homes, Dealer's Choice Award Sponsored by Allison's Chevrolet-Jeep, Andy Shaw Ford, Scott-Rodes Buick-Pontiac-GMC. Flea market spaces (10x10) are $15, and vendor spaces are $35. Registration is from 8:30 a.m. until noon, and judging begins at 12:30 p.m. Cost per vehicle is $10 if pre-registered and $15 on the day of the show. DONıT FORGET...that Thursday, June 5th is National Hunger Awareness Day and the opening celebration of Sharecroppers, the Community Table's organic community garden. Join them June 5 from 5 - 7 p.m. at the garden site for food and fun a good cause. To get to the garden, take a right on Grindstaff Cove Road off of Mill Street. Take the first left, Central, and then another left, Brendle. Follow the road, which turns into Storybook Lane, park at the Church of Christ and walk over to the garden. ON JUNE 5,...in communities across the country, people will gather to focus the nation's attention on the problem of domestic hunger and its impact on the nation's children. In support of this effort, Food Lion, in partnership with America's Second Harvest, announces a month-long program titled "Hunger Has a Cure," which will run through July 5 in all 1,190 Food Lion stores. Food and funds contributed in each store will support that area's local Second Harvest food bank.Customers can contribute change into coin collection canisters or into Coinstar machines at Food Lion stores or purchase $1 paper icons at the register. Or, they can purchase one or more paper icons for a $3 or $5 bag of food. These contributions all benefit the community's local food bank. Food Lion has a long and gratifying history with America's Second Harvest. In 2002, Food Lion distributed 4,350 tons of food, which equals a value of approximately $13 million, through Second Harvest affiliates in 11 states.
