Deitz Mountain Gospel

EDDIE DEITZ...

and Mountain Gospel will hold their first Homecoming Sing at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 9, at East Fork Baptist Church. Also singing will be the Smoky Mountain Boys. The outdoor event is free; those attending are asked to bring lawn chairs.

Concessions will be provided by the Jackson County Rescue Squad in memory of Lamar Wood, a longtime church member who was also a member of the rescue squad.


Undeen Undeen

UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA...

senior Greg Undeen plans to do a summer internship with this newspaper. His first story, which is about local hunter Steve Farley, appears in this week's sports section. Greg is majoring in photojournalism and said he hopes to work for National Geographic one day. He worked as a graphic designer and screen printer before returning to school. A native of Urbana, Ill., Greg moved to Gainesville, Fla., when his father was named an associate professor there. Greg, who was married to wife Lori a couple of weeks ago, is the son of Al and Veda Undeen of Whittier.

LOCAL MUSICIANS...

and crafters can still participate in the Dillsboro Heritage Festival, which is set for Saturday, June 8. This year marks the 18th that Dillsboro merchants have sponsored the all-day event, and it's shaping up to be one of the best ever, said organizers Stacey Hepp, Mona Gersky and Brenda Anders. listening pleasure Friday night, May 31. Hear the Two Kellys at SoHo Grill and Racquet Club in Cullowhee. Husband-and-wife duo Kelly and Kelly Timco will play and sing a variety of music from bluegrass to folk beginning at 7 p.m. There is no cover charge.


MARLY YOUMANS...

formerly of Cullowhee, will receive the 2001 Michael Shaara Award for Excellence in Civil War Fiction June 26 in St. Louis. Youmans, author of "The Wolf Pit," will read from her novel during the ceremony at the Missouri Historical Society. A reception and book signing, featuring both the winner and Jeff Shaara, will follow the ceremony. Youmans lives in Cooperstown, N.Y., with her husband and children. She is the daughter of Hubert and Mary Youmans of Cullowhee.

BEN McGINNIS ...

graduated from Flint Hill School in Oakton, Va., as the Class of 2002 salutatorian. Son of Jim and Terri McGinnis of Oak Hill, Va., and grandson of Gene and Hilda Buchanan McGinnis of Alexandria, Va., Ben is the great-nephew of Vernon and Mildred Haskett of Fairview and Frank and Kathleen Buchanan of Webster. Ben plans to attend the University of Virginia and major in aerospace engineering.
