FOR THE 17TH YEAR....

in a row, the folks at First Baptist Church will cook beans and cornbread to serve at their World Hunger Luncheon, so they should be good at it by now. This year's event will be Friday, June 6, from 11 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. in the church fellowship hall. Tickets are $5 and may be purchased from church members or at the door. Since the food is donated, the money received is almost 100 percent profit, and every cent will go to organizations that work toward alleviating world hunger.


SYLVA RENTAL WILL...

hold its grand opening Saturday, May 31, from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. The store, located at 1674 E. Main St. beside State Employees Credit Union, offers rental equipment for residential and commercial use, including track hoes, trenchers and everything in between. Stop by for refreshments and to learn about their inventory.


DON'T MISS...

the annual fish fry at Love's Chapel Methodist Church this Saturday, May 31, from 3 to 7 p.m. Cost is $6 and includes fish, baked beans, fries, cole slaw, dessert and drink. Music will be by the Fiddling Dills Sisters, Chuck Norris, Bound By Grace and One Accord.


DAVID SCHULMAN...

of Asheville, son of Sol Schulman of Sylva, has sold his debut novel to John Blair Publishers with a mid-2004 publication date. Schulman's novel is loosely based on a 1930s Asheville incident. The late John Parris, who covered the story for the Associated Press, was instrumental in helping Schulman secure background information. Schulman is married to the former Denissa Andrews Perry of Cullowhee.


EVERYONE IS...

ALLISON'S...

Chevy-Jeep is sponsoring a raffle to raise money for its Relay for Life team. Proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society. Tickets are $1 and can be purchased at Allison's. Prizes are a gift basket valued at $100 from Gifts of the Heart and a Mossberg 835 12-gage Camo turkey gun valued at $375. SOUL INFUSION...

Bistro and Tea House will host a community jam and open mic night Saturday, May 31, from 9 to midnight. Soul Infusion also has a variety of live performances on tap during the coming weeks.


THE ANNOUNCEMENT ...

of David and Lois Monteith's 50th wedding anniversary celebration on Sunday, June 1, that appeared in last week's paper failed to note that all friends and relatives are invited to attend. The Monteiths will be honored during a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. at Lovedale Baptist Church; it is requested that gifts be omitted.


JONATHAN SELLERS...

grandson of Harley and Sharon Sellers of Sylva, recently earned the rank of Eagle Scout in Elizabeth, Ind. A member of Boy Scout Troop 47, sponsored by Elizabeth United Methodist Church, Sellers, 18, is the son of Doug and Sandy Sellers of Laconia, Ind. A senior at South Central Junior-Senior High School in Elizabeth, Jonathan is a member of the National Honor Society and was recently selected for Who's Who Among High School Students. He plans to attend Auburn University, where he will major in aerospace or computer engineering and participate in the U.S. Navy ROTC program.


A PROGRAM...

initiated this year at Western Carolina University is designed to help the incoming freshman class headed to Cullowhee in August find new places to shop, eat, worship and get involved in community service activities while in their home away from home. WCU's Orientation Program for new students has issued an invitation to all local businesses, churches and civic organizations to attend a new series of information fairs that will be part of this summer's orientation sessions. Dates for the new orientation information fairs are June 9, 13, 20 and 27 and July 2 from 9:30 until 11:30 a.m. in the Ramsey Center. For more information, call the orientation programs office at 227-7087.


BEGINNING JUNE 1, CATMAN...

will post pictures at Wal-Mart of dogs and cats awaiting adoption.
