FIRST CITIZENS BANK...has announced several recent promotions at its Sylva branch. Michael Shropshire has been elected senior vice president. Currently a relationship banker, Shropshire received his bachelor's degree from Indiana University.Brenda Patterson has been named market executive for the bank's offices in Sylva, Franklin and Highlands. A vice president, she received her bachelor's degree in mathematics from Western Carolina University. Patterson is a board member of the Jackson County Community Foundation and a member of the Sylva Rotary Club. Scott Connor has been named relationship banker for Sylva, Franklin and Highlands. A vice president, he earned his bachelor's in accounting from WCU and is currently pursuing certification from the N.C. School of Banking. Connor is chairman of the WestCare Health System Foundation and a member of Jackson Development Corp. and the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. He is vice president of WCU's Town & College Club, which brings together university staff and community leaders. Jan Revis has been named financial services officer for the Sylva office. A member of Ochre Hill Baptist Church, she is on the finance committee of the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. Rebecca Robinson has been named teller supervisor. She is music director and a Sunday school teacher at Sylva Church of God, where she is a member. |

SOHO GRILL...and Racquet Club in Cullowhee will offer free musical entertainment this weekend. Gin & Juice, which features acoustic musicians Ginny McAfee and Benji Barnes playing everything from bluegrass to rock will play Friday, May 24. Steve and Mary Ann Lengyel will play Smoky Mountain style gospel Saturday, May 25. Steve plays fiddle, and Mary Ann joins in on the washtub bass. Music begins at 7 p.m. each night. DON'T FORGET...Dillsboro's annual Heritage Festival coming up on Saturday, June 8. The daylong event will feature food, crafts and traditional music. Native American dancer Eddie Swimmer is among this year's scheduled performers.
CORRECTION...The Women's Community Bible Study will meet Wednesday mornings at 9:30 a.m. at First Baptist Church starting June 5. Last week's paper incorrectly listed the time as 9:30 p.m.; we regret the error.
THE HUMANE...Society of Jackson County (ARF) will hold its annual flea market and pet adoption Saturday and Sunday, May 25 and 26, in the grassy area in front of Wal-Mart. Donations accepted beginning at 8 a.m.; sales begin at 11 a.m.
A REUNION...is planned for Sylva-Webster High's Class of 1967 on Saturday, June 29. The committee needs help in locating the following classmates: Jimmy Bradley, Regina Kilpatrick, Carolyn Norman, Jack Parris and Alva Lou Stiles. IF YOU ARE...at least 12 years old and can chop a carrot or peel a potato, you are qualified to volunteer at the Community Table, said coordinator Patti Barge. "With school out, we've lost our WCU student volunteers on Thursdays and Sundays. If you can volunteer to cook or serve on those days, call 586-6782."
A WASHINGTON...student named Emily Covington is doing a school report about North Carolina and would be grateful for any information about the state that our readers might send her. CALLING ALL POETS...The International Library of Poetry has announced that $58,000 in prizes will be awarded this year in the International Open Poetry Contest. Deadline for contest submissions is July 31. The contest is open to all poets, whether previously published or not. To enter, send one original poem of any subject or style to The International Library of Poetry, Suite 19914, 1 Poetry Plaza, Owings Mills, Md. 21117. The poem should be 20 lines or less, and the poet's name and address should appear on the top of the page. You may enter online at www.poetry.com.
