REMEMBER YOUR MOTHER...

this Sunday with a delicious meal she doesn't have to cook. This week's Sylva Herald offers two great dining guides that spotlight our fine area restaurants - our biweekly spring dining guide and our special Mother's Day page.

WHEN YOU DINE...

out this weekend, a number of local eateries will donate a portion of this weekend's profits to United Christian Ministries to be used for single mothers who need help to provide necessities for their children. Restaurants who will help with the project are Alan's, Lulu's Cafe, Soho Grill, Well House, New Horizons, Spring Street Cafe, Riverhouse, Cullowhee Cafe and O'Malleys. When you visit these restaurants this weekend, please thank them for their concern.

WE HOPE EVERYONE SAW...

the "Smoky Mountain Mavens" on ABC's "Good Morning America" Tuesday. Sylva Mayor Brenda Oliver was featured in a brief interview during which she said the best thing about Sylva is "the beauty of the mountains and the people." The group also held signs bearing last year's county sesquicentennial logo. Herald Advertising Manager Margo Gray designed the eye-catching signs, and Features Editor Rose Hooper was among the mavens. The group also included Martha Queen, Veronica Nicholas, Vicky Green and Myrtle Schrader.

THE ALL-VOLUNTEER...

Humane Society of Jackson County (ARF) will hold a flea market and pet adoption Saturday, May 25, (camp out overnight) and Sunday, May 26, on the grassy area in front of Wal-Mart. Community members with usable items to donate (no clothes, please) may bring them to the site at 8 a.m. May 25. If donations must be made before the sale day, call Karen at 586-8077 to make arrangements.

THE AMERICAN LUNG...

Association is offering a Mother's Day golf special. Give your mom the perfect gift with a Golf Privilege Card from the American Lung Association. For the price of an average single greens fee, you get 700 rounds of golf at more than 300 courses in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. And, especially for mom and her golfing partner, ALANC will offer a "Buy One Golf Card for $40 and Get One Free." That's a 50 percent savings. The golf cards support the ongoing lung association programs or children with asthma, asthma camps, smoking cessation clinics and the environment. To order or for more information, call the American Lung Association at 1-800-452-8283.

PEGGY'S...

PEGGY'S Consignment and Resale is a new shop located on Mill Street across from Ward's Plumbing. Owner Peggy Bowers specializes in plus sizes and children's clothes and is now accepting spring consignments.
